Can asthma inhalers cause cough or irritate lungs

They can cause coughing, usually as a reflex reaction but sometimes because a drug isn't right for someone. Using a spacer with an MDI inhaler (one you press) is recommended anyway to endure most effective delivery but also minimises coughing.

Irritation can occur for different reasons. As Twinkly has said, aerosol inhalers can cause a involuntary reaction as the spray hits the throat just because of the force. Or the patient could be intolerant to the propellant in the inhaler, in which case the lungs are affected. Dry powder inhalers can irritate also, depending if any of the ingredients are an irritant for the patient. The medication is suspended in a carrier ingredient, often lactose, so either the medication or the carrier could be the culprit.

If you think that you need a spacer or could be intolerant to any of your inhalers then best speak to your asthma nurse or GP.
