Feeling like I’m inhaling smoke...

Hi all! I think I’ve come down with a cold/sinus infection but have recently found it harder to breathe. The only way I can describe the sensation is as if I’m stood close to someone that’s smoking and I’m inhaling all of the smoke. My chest is so very sore and itchy which makes me cough to try and clear the sensation (to no avail) - what’s best for me to do? 😬😰

Hi Kaylecia. I notice that when I am not doing so good the first thing I notice is things smell more strongly. I take this as our bodies trying to warn us that things aren’t right, but that’s just me!

If you have an action plan, now might be the time to put it into practice.

Now, this next bit might sound a bit stupid, but have you thought about wearing a mask to filter the air? In normal times it would look really strange and over dramatic, but in the current climate you would probably get away with it. You could make the excuse you have a bit of a cold and don’t want to pass it on.

If you haven’t got an action plan, try contacting your GP or asthma nurse and tell them about your sore chest. There are things they can suggest to see you through and prevent things getting worse.

That sounds interesting - I have actually experienced something similar!

I hadn’t thought of that actually... What kind of mask would be best to try?

I’m definitely going to give my GP a ring and see what they can do to help. I haven’t got an asthma plan - is this something I need to ask for?

Everyone who has asthma is supposed to have an action plan. However, 18 months later I still only have a partial plan!

It is just things you can do when you notice your asthma deteriorating. For instance, I can take two extra puffs of my preventer when I notice my peak flows starting to slide. Very useful.

As for masks, it depends how good you are with them. Some people have problems with their breathing when they wear one. I find a two layer cotton one, with a pocket for a filter ( so I suppose it is three layer in parts) suits me best, but I can’t use the filter - it makes it a bit too humid for me. Being a bit of an oddball, I also find I can breathe better and wear it for much longer if I put it on upside down!

Talk about a right Wally 😊
