Coughing up greeny stuff with blood

I know this is gross so apologise in advance. I am on antibiotics (due to finish today) and steroids, also on 3 diff inhalers. I have been coughing this stuff up all day, not sure if I should ring the doctors or if I’m being dramatic? My chest feels tight, am wheezy, my peak flow is 250 though so above the range that would be concerning for me. I do have blood tests booked for tomorrow morning at 8 so I’m wondering if I’m likely fine and can just mention this to the nurse and show her the picture or if I should leave it. Any advice would be great.

That could be a sign your infection has turned into pneumonia

It could also be a tear in the little flap at the back of your throat from coughing

Either way I would be calling the docs today to be sure

Morning - I 've just come across your post- I hope you have been in touch with the doctor - if not do so today even if via nurse. I had pneumonia when i had the same blood in my green sputum. Are you thirsty? Tired? Back or shoulder hurting? x Anita

Not yet, I will today. I’m really wheezy and my peak flow is 180 so I think I’m gona have to take a trip to urgent care. Am exhausted, my back is in a lot of pain a lot of the time. Not so much thirsty but not really able to wee as much as usual. I’ve just finished a course of antibiotics so I would have thought if it was pneumonia it would have been cleared up. Not sure what’s wrong with me at the moment it’s awful.

You may just need a stronger anti biotic- I know I had 2 anti biotics when I had pneumonia- our bodies get used to certain AB s over time and they don't work as well on clearing the bugs x

Hope you've now had the opportunity to talk with your doctor and had an antibiotic upgrade. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Well I’m back in hospital after another severe asthma attack, peak flow was 70. At best after nebs and steriods etc it’s still 150. Hate hospital and feeling ill. Missing my kids too!

Not doing too great, had magnesium and nebs, not responding too well. They’re discussing intensive care as next step. This is a nightmare.

Hi Titch1908,

Blood in spit/phlegm is always a worry BUT

It is common in infection to have blood come up and can have many sources i.e. from nose or throat or lungs. Most common reason is burst blood vessel from coughing.

It is important to mention to Nurse/Dr and show photo also let them know how many tissues you have had blood on. They will investigate if you continue bringing blood up after a while but while you are infected I would mention it but don't worry too much.

I would also suggest the infection is aggravating your asthma making you feel crap. If you haven't already ask GP for 5 day course of Prednisolone.

Ask GP for Sputum test - You know those pots you give urine samples in. If you get one of those cough or spit into that and give back to surgery they will send to lab if its clear its virus if it is not it will be bacterial.

I had a really bad bacterial infection (moraxella cattarhalis) started 5th December 2018, I was ill till March 2019 and it took many months after that before I felt normal because it aggravated my asthma (honestly though haven't been same since). I started bringing up blood in my phlegm and after 6 months my GP referred me for Cancer check (CT scan) which all came back clear and then had ENT referral and had camera down nose and throat also all clear.

It took over a year but eventually stopped and the test all came clear so was reassured.

Hi thanks for the comments, after 6 days I’m home from hospital. Was a very scary experience. On oxygen for days, nebs every 3 hours, magnesium IV and 2 other things IV not sure what they were though. Had a look at my discharge summary, life threatening asthma attack, was lucky. Respiratory nurse at the hospital was fab and my consultant is great too. Got to take it easy as still quite breathless and they want me to go back if I at all feel don’t right because of how severe this attack was. According to my notes there were multiple deteriorations during this admission, and I was on 15 mins obs. Scary how dangerous asthma can be. I take all my meds and inhalers, don’t smoke, don’t drink, am active (before my last severe attack). CT scan did show than the bronichal wall is thickened though so wondering if that’s contributing to it.

I'm glad you're back home after such a very scary time. It makes me shudder! I hope you continue to improve and please take it easy. Virtual hug.

Thank you. It’s definitely made me appreciate the severity of it. If i hadn’t gone to hospital I think there is a big chance my kids wouldn’t have a mum. I was not willing to go into hospital but I’m really grateful to the doctor that terrified me given how much worse things did get. Very glad to be home and giving my kids a cuddle!

I’m so glad you are feeling a bit better and home you really worried me, I’m guessing by the 15mins obs they decided to keep you in intensive care which is obviously what you needed. People don’t realise how severe asthma can be sometimes I don’t I didn’t want to go to hospital once but my asthma nurse made me I ended up almost intubated and sent to intensive care and they wrote on my discharge severe/ life threatening asthma attack and it really opened my eyes to how bad it can be and that I must take it seriously
