Chest pain and blocked nose

Am having Asthma attack almost every day, is like prednisolone is not helping, because any little stress, I find it hard to breathe . My chest and ribs hurt evry now and then.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling atm. If you keep having a blocked nose is there an element of hayfever going on? Have you tried a daily antihistamine to see if it helps? Also (not to toot my own horn but...) it may be worth reading a prev post of mine as it helps highlight some asthma tigger/mimicers; healthunlocked.com/asthmauk...

If you’re finding stress is really causing the SoB (in itself or then flaring up your asthma), mindfulness/meditation/breathing exercises may help calm it all down

Do you have a maintenance inhaler? And if you’ve been using loratidine a while it may be worth switching to another in case you’ve built up a tolerance to it. Alternatively nasal polyps can also block your nose and give post nasal drip so if the antihistamine and breathing exercises don’t help them it may be something like that...

If been on Loratadine a long time see if Dr will change. My GP changed mine to an antihistamine I can take in the morning and bed time its called Cetirizine. Monteleukast might help also.

I also have fluticasone proportionate nasal spray mind don't use it two many weeks consecutively or it can start nose bleeds.

For my blocked nose i use a small dose of a first generation antihistamine dimenhydrinate. Loratidine and many sec gen antihist didn’t help me. I take it at night My other medication is flutiform.

Hi , how you doing today? Just a thought are you using all your prevention medication properly ( you could check over the phone with the doctor)

I’m only asking because after 40 years of asthma I had a check with a new nurse who talked me through my inhalers and it’s made such a difference, I use my preventer 2 times a day and very rarely use my ventolin inhaler now after years of grabbing it every hour and being continually weazing and being at a&e or the Doctors

I have Ventolin inhaler. Used preventive inhaler seretide but my asthma attack became worst.

Some people don’t get on with one brand of preventer, but are fine with others. I’m not sure where you are in the world, and if there are other options available to you (fostair, relvar, symbicort, clenil, to name a few). Some people do better on the ‘puff’ MDI inhalers, others in the ‘suck’ DPI versions, so if it’s possible it’s worth ‘shopping’ around. There are also different add ins that can be used (like montelukast etc).

Equally there are a lot of asthma mimickers out there, so I’m not sure if you’ve been confirmed to have asthma but reflux, allergies, anxiety, BPD and VCD/ILO are all very common mimickers which wouldn’t be helped with asthma medications (they can all also worsen someone’s asthma). I’m not sure if you’ve ever done peak flow or spirometry but they are often what’s used (in the UK) to help confirm an asthma diagnosis.

If you go to the surgery website, most surgeries have an e-consult facility where you can put your issue (this is an NHS tech) that sends message to your surgery - avoids having to go through receptionist.

GP's can then call you back and do a telephone consult. If they do feel they need to see you they can arrange for you to come into the surgery or do a home visit.

Hi Omoola,

If you are having asthma attacks almost everyday you really need to speak to your GP. I noticed below that you said that you were waiting for Covid to lift, but you really don’t need to, you can ask for a telephone conversation.

You may need a change of inhalers or another treatment added on.

If you don’t get back to your GP he will think that the predicted worked for you and that you are now doing fine.

Hi omoola like you I have been struggling with my asthma , for 8 months up and down I found prednisolone did not help me either only had this for a week though, months of meds montelukast and Carbocistein together and Both separately I have Sirdupla preventer ,rang docs yesterday they advised also try a steroid nose spray and a saline nose spray buy over the counter,Perhaps this may help you worth a try ,hope this helps, hope you feel better soon,

Hi so sorry your so unwell with the asthma I too have asthma and it sounds as it either your asthma is not under control or you have another health issue. Do you have fibromyalgia or do you have a chest infection. Also you could be so rundown that your asthma is effected and its getting worse. Do you have pain in your shoulder. I am asking as this is what I was like until I went into hospital with pleurisy. I would definitely ring the asthma nurse and your dr too as they need to have a look at you. Wishing you a lovely day. Hi Omoola. Sorry that you are struggling at the moment. Definitely talk to your GP or asthma nurse now about your prescribed medication. Don't wait for a face to face appointment. If Seretide is making your asthma worse then you need to work with your GP or AN to find a better inhaler that you use every day to prevent asthma. Ventolin is a rescue inhaler rather than a a long term treatment - relief is only temporary. Definitely say if the course of Prednisolone is not helping and the Seretide makes things worse.

A stuffed up nose is horrible. Beconase is a steroid nasal spray, if used regularly, will clear your nasal congestion. It will take up to a week before it starts working.

Sudafed & Otrivine type nasal sprays should be avoided as they will cause more congestion if used for more than three days.
