Asthma, sinus and catarrh

Hi, I am new here, can anyone help, had Asthma since I was young , now 48, and have hay fever and sinus problems for the first time. Managing my Asthma, but can any advise on sinus and catarrh, it is taking over my well being at the moment. take care everyone.

When my sinusis are playing up. Warm flannel over eye brows helps and massaging for head area. I know it sounds strange but it does work. If needed I take sinutab really help (it's the red box) they really do help. But please check for allergies as I don't know if or what your allergic too. Hope that helps. Stay safe

I too am suffering from sinus problems at the moment. I massage the sides of my nose and it seems to help. x Anita

Have you spoken to your GP about it? It’s probably worth a mention! Also have you tried things like steaming, sinus wash/rinsing (it’s yuck but it can help), and drinking more water or on the medical side have you tried any nasal sprays/antihistamines etc? It sounds like you’ve possibly got a bit of post nasal drip going on...

Equally if you feel like it might be a sinus infection a GP call is needed jic you need antibiotics. If it’s a ‘just’ drainage issue then it may be worth YouTubing ‘sinus drainage massage’ videos to see if that helps...

At the first sign of a runny or stuffy nose I start my Beconase, a steroid nasal spray. I also take antihistamines but this pollen season seems to be very high and is affecting a lot more people than usual.

Whatever you do, don't take Sudafed or Otrivine or similar decongestants as they are for short term use (3 days) & can cause information if over used.

Beconase is available OTC but I get mine on prescription and only use it when necessary.

You may want to discuss with your GP in order to check for allergies and to rule out nasal polyps.

Hi,

Ask for a blood test to check, among other things, your vitamin A and D. Both are toxic at high doses as they are fat soluble and will stay in the body and not get flushed out like vitamin C but both of them help your immune system. Vitamin A is particularly helpful for the mucous membranes of your body. Warning - high doses can affect the fetus if you are pregnant.

Thank you to all, who have helped a lot. Bloods were done just before lockdown and came back ok, after steaming earlier, something has loosened, now got a clearing cough, does Hayfever effect asthma, I feel I need to reach for my Ventolin, and am tired out. Shielding for myself and my elderly parents live with me. so feel quite alone as I don't want them to worry, stay safe Lucie x

Hi there Southsea, I have chronic sinusitis and hayfever and recently had a very poorly chest....maybe adult onset asthma doc says.....anyway I started lockdown awaiting an ENT appointment to discuss an operation to help my sinus drainage, so its pretty bad....and we're in lockdown....so no hope of surgery anytime soon.....I decided I had to try and work out best plan to work with for the interim.....so I use a neti pot, there are several designs all do same thing, basically you wash the muck out of your sinuses .....both absolutely gross....and strangely satisfying.....anyway, I do that twice day give it a good old blow....and then use my prescription steroid nasal spray........I'm basically keeping a lid on the disgusting congestion and horrid stuffiness until I can get the op......time consuming and a bit of a faff but it works for me....

Hi Sonia, thank you, I have the neilmed,, just clear water coming out, sometimes I feel I have loosened some of the blurgh, as I feel it on my throat, and then have to cough which is freaking me out.

It is gross, and sometimes it makes me cough a bit......I do find that giving my nose a massive blow does actually help. You might need to tip your head down a bit more into the sink, the water shouldn't really go down to your throat? And spit any out that comes out if the back of your nose into your mouth? Hope this helps you xx
