Low temperature, asthmatic probably recovering from Covid

leavemebreatheless profile image

I'm sick for 5 weeks, probably from covid. Had 2 weeks of high temps 37.7 - 38 and over. Then a week of normal, but the last 10 days I'm finding it really hard to keep my temperature over 35.

I've had all the covid symptoms and am still breathless, very pale and feeling tight all time time. Take montelukast, seretide and ventolin but having very little effect. Last couple of days so breathless can't even wash or prepare food for myself. Gp started me on low dose steroids and a exputex type of bottle with antibiotics to start tomorrow. I forgot to tell her about my temperature.

Currently in bed all day, fully dressed with blanket and duvet over me, sun beaming outside and my temperature only gets up to 35.1/35.2 after activity(opening a couple of windows, getting dressed - nothing strenuous I'm too breathless) and quickly falls to 34.1- 34.4. Using an Ear thermometer with new batteries. I've one of those strip thermometers as well, and it only warms up the 35 mark, so it would appear my ear thermometer is accurate.

Anyone come across this before? Any advice?

I personally would call 111 and get advice from them. Especially if your temp won’t come up

I'm in Ireland, we don't have an equivalent. There's out of hours gp service but because I was exposed to confirmed covid case they won't see me and will send me to a&e. I'd prefer not to go to hospital, if at all possible.

And thanks for the reply, I'm a bit on my own on this and haven't any to talk this through with. My family don't know I've been ill. My mother is absolutely terrified of covid and I hadn't the heart to upset her and tell her that I probably have it. I had no close contact with family for over 10 days before I got symptoms so they didn't need to be told, luckily.

Low temperature can be a sign of bacterial pneumonia the common ‘follow up’ illness of covid and that’s what’s causing so many issues. Please get it checked out

I’d definitely advise calling 111. Low temps can be a sign of issues that people forget, and it seems often the covid problems kick in after the initial infection.

A body temperature under 35° is considered hypothermic & yours is hovering at this level. I don’t know why that is, but you should call 111 or, if any worse, 999, without delay nhs.uk/conditions/hypothermia/

I just want to join the general chorus of voices above. You do need to seek help!

I bet your oxygen levels are low so you need to definitely seek medical help. If you're hypoxic you will be very short of breath and feel horrible. It's a symptom of Covid-19 and if your levels are too low you will need oxygen.

My temperature came up to 35.4 about midnight and stayed there. I was able to sleep and it's still staying steady at 35.5. I have a oxygen meter and my levels are 96/97. I'm ringing my gp today. Thanks Everyone

Can you get ongoing videoconsultations with a GP? This virus is nasty and changeable and you want to be sure you're tracking your vitals along with a professional. The temp sounds worrisome. I'm on day 21 myself and had a really low temp (35.6) and shaking chills early on and had to put on several layers of clothing. Chills are one of the things they're closely tracking in France so definitely good to err on the side of overcautious.

Take good care and keep us posted!

Hi I’m so sorry you’re going through this. As others have said please keep in touch with your local GP, via Skype.

The antibiotics plus steroids should help with pneumonia if you have it.

On a personal note, I’ve had low temperatures too and it freaked me out. But I am now fine.

I was in Florida late Dec and caught a bad cough off my FIL from Canada. I was in bed tired for only 3 days, had some breathlessness but Monteleukast helped me not need my ventolin. I don’t remember having a temperature. I had a dry cough for a couple of weeks. I was then admitted to hospital with weird neurological symptoms - weak right side, pins and needles (paraesthesia) in both legs, so they worried about maybe MS or a ‘post viral neuropathy’. When I was admitted my potassium was low. Low enough to correct. Which is weird - and is a symptom of Covid we now know.

After returning to the U.K. mid-January my lungs were horrible. I have adult onset asthma and never had it that bad, but had 2 months where I felt I had no ‘top part’ of my lung to breathe into. Tired , slept a lot. Struggled to walk on walks with my friend. My lungs sounded like an old emphysema patients. Thought it was the worst asthma episode.

I took my temperature at one point and it was 35 C for a couple of days. I was more worried than if I had a high temp. I remember hearing that patients in hospital with low temperatures are the ones to worry about. So then I became anxious and tried on 2 different thermometers ear and mouth and it was the same. But I otherwise felt ok. Maybe a bit cold, but then I felt so anxious !! I calmed myself down by thinking I felt fine but that if it persisted or went any lower I’d call the GP etc

I just kept doing what I was doing. Drink a ton of water to help thin secretions. Take 2000-4000 mg of Vit D every day. Take 75 mg of zinc a day. Vitamin C. Take 500 mg of Quercetin twice a day, if you can get some delivered from Amazon I got some next day. And sleep as much as you can to boost your immune system

Keep well and I hope this is the worst of it and you improve from here! :)

PS I’ll never know if I had Covid but maybe it was it (?)

PPS my temp tends to run low anyway. 4-6 weeks in it was 36 C today some people don’t run as hot

Hi if you don’t mind me asking. How long overall did it take you to recover from it all - breathing problems, temp etc.

Hi the low temp was for 2, maybe 3 days. I felt my usual self except for the chest issues. I didn't feel overly tired or anything, but the low temps were a worry.

Now, a couple of months on I am on seretide 250 +125 am and pm. This seems to be keeping things in check. My peak flow is around 400/410. It used to be 450, maybe 480. But I can't seem to get it any higher and I don't want to go any higher on the seretide as I lose my voice with it as it is.

I tried switching to ciclesonide (alvesco) as it is more 'lung specific' than the seretide in the hopes it would improve my voice - and my lungs got SO bad. After only a few days. Lots of thick mucous. Felt chesty. Top of chest all crunchy sounding. (Incidentally, alvesco is supposed to possibly help covid.) But I had the worst time on it.

I tried alvesco again last week instead of the 125 seretide and again, my lungs really deteriorated.

So, I'm 'Ok' on my current regime. I've never in my life required this much inhalers. I'm 48 and very sporty so its a concern that I now appear to be plateauing at a lower peak flow than I used to have, despite 2.5 months of med/high dose seretide.

And coming off it makes my lungs worse than they have ever been. I'm hoping to try tapering down asap ie after 6 months I guess? But I'm wondering / worried my lungs might then be too 'used to' the high dose inhalers and it will be difficult to come off? Does anyone have any experience with this?

My goodness, sounds absolutely awful, bless you! I had COVID and then immediately after, a chest infection that kept me breathless for weeks. I finally went to the GP who gave me treatment and I'm finally feeling more human.

I urge you to seek medical advice as this is no way for you to live! could be some sort of infection.

A & E may be daunting at a time like this, but just yesterday a doctor on the news said more people are dying from treatable conditions than COVID! You’ve nothing to lose, and the nhs is coping.

Don’t suffer in silence either. Your family should be there for you and you deserve to be supported. I can’t speak for them but Im sure they wouldn’t want to see you suffer like this. Doing nothing can be fatal, but you’ve nothing to lose, getting checked out.

All the very best of luck to you x

Hi there, As it's some time since you wrote about your condition I hope by now you have had help.

I have just finished course antibiotics and steroids for chest infection, I was fairly sure that's what it was, I find Ventolin to be good and it helps me, I have never taken Seretide.

In view of how poorly you sound I hope you have had help and if not and you are still struggling you must get help.

I don't think any of us want to go into hospital, especially now with all that is happening, but they may be able to treat you at home.

I hope you soon get well.

Its weird you saying this.. I have't had a temperature... but had a different virus way back at beginning of March... I take my temp every day.. and a lot of days my temp was between 34 and 36.. which I thought wasn't too unusual.. I feel fine.. but haven't been doing much.. got bad rhinitis atm (I have perennial rhinitis) so put it down to that. I did read under 35 could be hypothermia, but I don't feel too cold.. took my temp several times to make sure... last one was 36.5 so its ok within normal limits. \never thought to be worried if it goes low
