Non allergic rhinitis & asthma

Hi everyone!

Does anyone suffer from non allergic rhinitis?

I m finding my symptoms have increased just lately and I m wondering if pollen or some other spring time pollen is irritating me? I ve had allergy testing/blood testing but nothing was picked up so I was classed as non allergic. Also I m constantly throat clearing as well which is driving me mad! This is a year into my diagnosis and I find this time of year the worst for symptoms.

Thank you! 😊

Yes last year I saw a consultant ENT having suffered many years with this. 10 years ago i was told by my GP I had nasal polypz. And gave me nasal spray to reduce their size.

Having had a camera up my nose with the consultant. I have chronic rhinitis. NO POLYPS. now the Nasal Spray mometsone. And Antihistamine my COPD nurse prescribed me at the time she requested the ENT specialist is the correct meds for this. My consultant said if I stopped taking it it would be a whole lot worse.

I take Beconase whenever I get rhinitis, it doesn't seem to have a season and so I always have a fresh spray just in case it kicks off. It takes a few days to work and I will take it for a couple of weeks then restart it, if necessary. I used to be prone to polyps but these are under control now.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, I have severe refractory eosinophilic asthma, Churg Strauss EGPA and sinusitis. They used to say it was perennial rhinitis but it’s gotten worse and after further investigations they diagnosed the severe sinusitis.

I completely relate to the constant throat clearing as that was something that started about 10 years ago for me which was about 2 years before they diagnosed the severe asthma & it is still a problem at times.

Thanks for your reply, I ask so have eosinophilic asthma alongside non allergic rhinitis. I take fostair 200, montelukast, dymista nasal spray, fexofenadine and also omeprezole. I also use a nasal rinse!! Is there anything you have found that helps with the throat clearing? Sometimes I think the nasal rinse helps. Thanks 😊

Hi, I get so confused with this but I think I have both allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, alongside non-allergic, non-eosinophilic asthma.

I used to get hayfever symptoms in spring but had negative allergy tests - however have been told that's not definitive and you can still be allergic. I feel like I am reacting to certain trees at least in spring. I used to take fexofenadine and Avamys spray in spring/summer only and was advised to start in about February to be prepared (by asthma nurses/consultant).

However, I now seem to have the nasal symptoms ALL the time so have started taking the fexofenadine and spray all year round. To be honest not sure if the fexofenadine does much for my nose in winter but I got itchy skin when I tried not taking it so back on it.

I'm also on montelukast - it was the first asthma drug that worked for me years ago. It's not as good now and I've been on and off it a few times (my current consultant says 'your asthma is not allergic why are you on it?) I have no idea why it works but it seems to help my exercise tolerance a bit so I went back on it in top of all the other asthma meds. Not sure if it helps the nose.

The thing that really does help (as advised by AUK nurse, thank you!) is the nasal spray - I use Sterimar. I use it before taking Avamys and also at other times and it really helps to clear out all the gunk, especially before bed - otherwise it affects sleep, even if the asthma is behaving relatively well.

I rang the AUK helpline before all this COVID stuff really kicked off and they said worth seeing GP as I've had months of symptoms with spray and antihistamine etc not really helping that much so thought maybe could use a different spray. Without wanting to get too graphic there is always gunk and sometimes blood and just ughh. But I couldn't get in to see GP before, and obviously these days it's not a priority - they'd need to look up my nose really, it's not a phone thing and not something I want to bother them with right now. My main issue is not catching the plague and avoiding hospital for lungs as long as I can, so the nose has to wait.

Hope this ramble helps! Bodies are weird and right now I would like to swap for one with a better nose (and also lungs which don't overreact madly to all viruses).

Hi there! Thanks for your reply. I also had allergy tests and they came back negative too! But I notice at this time of year my nose gets a bit yucky and I start the annoying throat clearing which I think is some sort of irritation. My consultant did say the Montelukast helps with sinus issues as it basically blocks any irritants...I end up taking this all year round as I just don’t want to risk feeling so poorly again, that also goes for the fexofenadine...I take that all year round too...just in case!

I do the nasal flushing too and it definitely helps. But the throat clearing issue drives me mad! D always starts just as I get into bed?!! 🙄

I have eosinophilic asthma... always feel this is the weird one! 😆 I m a non weezer too which which makes it hard to know when things are getting worse, my only sign is that when my nose gets gunky my chest starts to feel a bit irritated too. The consultant said this was because it’s the same tissue and it all gets inflamed together!!

It’s so know other people have these nasal problems too! It really is ‘irritating’ isn’t it?!! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I had the same and horrendous sinus pain, polyps and a post nasal drips. I use symbicort 400/12, spiriva respimat, bricanyl, mometasone, lanzoprazole, antihistamine, montelukast, nortriptyline for sinus pain. I use every natural remedy technique out there. Nothing worked but recently I used a humidifier and felt the benefit. The post nasal drip was easier. I have since started benralizumab and that is like a miracle.

I feel like a human. My asthma symptoms have stopped and I no longer have chronic sinusitis symptoms.
