VOCs versus Coronavirus threat

I have just got home early from my weekly circle dance group, something I value as it provides some exercise, but indoors.

However, tonight there was definitely some irritant in the air. I have no idea what, but I suspect it may well have been the cleaner they use in that hall, used more thoroughly and judiciously than usual, possibly added to by all the frantic hand washing that was going on using goodness what soap, or perhaps sanitisers. I suspect it was Coronavirus preparadness related. So, if I am right, do be prepared for more irritants......another reason, perhaps, not to go out so much!

That's been a worry of mine too. Disinfectants, bleach etc are a real trigger for me. I worry about catching the coronavirus and its totally right that disinfectants are being used to keep everything really clean, but from a personal point of view, I do think this means I will come into contact with a lot more triggers.

Quite! It hadn’t occurred to me before it happened. But as you say, needs must! I really don’t want the dreaded virus!

I've stopped using public transport and am limiting contacts outside our house. We go for a walk but no longer stop halfway for a coffee. I have two lunch dates this week with old friends and have decided to go but after that I am almost self isolating. I just hope the weather improves as I am perfectly happy sitting in the garden with a book.

I'm doing the same! Getting a little stir crazy so trying to get out of the house to go on a walk or bike ride at least once a day. I've been canceling my social events, too, which is a bummer. Good for our group of people to be cautious tho!

Unfortunately, I struggle with walking outside this time of year, but it has occurred to me that provided we make sure we have fuel, we could take a trip to some total spot for fresh air etc . With a picnic, of course, if we want refreshments.

We are lucky we live in an area that is as yet not so affected, but that could change, of course. I hope there’s going to be lots of good telly on! Plus I have books aplenty, and other distractions as well.

I’m still attending my weekly dance class to keep my fitness levels up - best way of boosting my immune system I can think of.

I agree! But last night I had to give up due to VOCs.

Bit of a teaser when to go out, as well as Heart stents moderate valve problem I have Asthma Diabetes High Blood pressure and in Mid 60's Job involves lots or person meeting. Still working etc. At an Asthma check GP mentioned Co-vid virus and said I need to be careful; because of complications if infected. Question is wjhe to pull up the drawbridge!

I any case younger and intrude health other half is out and about and working, so I guess its abut reducing own risk but realising there is only so much we can do. .

Hey there. I'm in Canada, just for perspective on my comments. Some disinfectants can be a trigger for me as well; for instance, swimming pools can trigger my asthma, depending on how recently the chemicals were added. Preemptively using my rescue inhaler (salbutamol) before I go swimming seems to work fine for me. Have you tried this?

Remember, as asthmatics, we are in the higher at-risk group for COVID-19. Public sanitation is a good thing.

Yes, public sanitation is essential, so no complaint from me! But clearly the types of cleaners/disinfectants can make a difference. I have no idea what was used where I was last night, but, no, Ventolin/salbutamol didn’t help. Leaving the place did. Eventually. I think for now it is just a fact of life, that there will be more irritants around, and some places perhaps are best avoided for that reason. So, for now, I am facing a quieter life, and I rather have that than this awful virus!

If areas require a high amount of disinfectants, they're probably best avoided anyway...

Or it could be a panicked reaction to the situation. It looks fine normally.

Using hand sanitizers brings on my eczema all over my hands. They get very sore, red, inflamed and dry, and if I continue the skin starts to peel off. This cannot be good.

Thank you for your reply! My original posting was four months ago! I have just reread your comments. Since then we have only rarely left our property, as we have been extra super careful. How things have changed in four months!
