I am very lucky having mild asthma since I had my first son developing asthma during pregnancy. I have symbicort turbohaler which I take 1puff twice a day, which increases up to 12 if I have a bad chest cough. I also have montelucast at night. So I feel really lucky, having seen really sick children with asthma in the role of a paediatric nurse before I retired. The big issue I have is I can't take ventolin as it gives me awful palpitations, and paramedics & ED mainly give ventolin in an emergency.

What strength is your Ventolin? I'm wondering if you used a spacer and a low dose you could take just enough of the medication to help but not enough to cause side effects.
It wouldn't matter as it gives me palpitations even from 1 puff, but as I am well controlled on symbicort & have been for years now. I know I am lucky but don't change what works is my motto.
