Hi, my son’s asthma is cured out of come and he has started to be triggered by our washing liquid especially when the clothes first come out of the machine. Can anyone recommend a perfume free or asthma friendly washing powder/liquid? Thank you

I use Surcare, available in Sainsburys, and Waitrose but often not other supermarkets. Waitrose also do a much cheaper one for sensitive folks, their own make, no perfume either. Surcare do a conditioner without perfume as well.

Household and personal perfumes are huge triggers for me too. Hope this helps 😊

Thank you so much, that is really helpful, he is 11 years old, had asthma from very young and has developed lots of new triggers in the last 18 months, including perfume, some, candles and changes in seasons, he was already sensitive to other people’s washing powders but ours has always been ok until now!!!!! X

Yes, things sometimes change over time, and you become more aware of triggers in different situations.

I can’t cope with room freshener perfumes, candles, paint or any other household ‘perfumes’. I have to use two microfibre cloths to dust, one damp to dust and one dry to shine up afterwards.

Also shower gels etc can be a problem, Sanex do a zero perfume range, but not always available.

Can your son take ibuprofen? If not, he may be sensitive to salicylates, which are used to ‘set’ a lot of perfumes, and in some foods too. That’s my problem!

A real nuisance!! 🙃

Oh yes I forgot to say paints etc!!!! That is so helpful thank you, not sure about ibuprofen, don’t think he has a problem, but he does have food allergies to egg and dairy!!! How long have you suffered???

I developed adult onset asthma in my thirties, some years ago now. I’m fine with eggs and dairy, so no common ground there. We’re all so different and varied...takes some thinking through. Maybe easier for adults, who’ve got more control over their environments, though it took me years to realise all my triggers, and how to deal with them. I say ‘all’ but there maybe some more out there!! One nuisance is that salbutamol (Ventolin) doesn’t work for me. After using it till I dropped sometimes, GP said ‘Do you think it’s working at all??’ I realised it wasn’t, or no longer was, so I swapped to Bricanyl and had much better results.

It’s a learning curve, steep sometimes, and always worrying! My son was troubled by asthma from about 8yrs old to a general decrease at about 16. He’s adult now and no further problems have cropped up yet. It was a real worry.....I was always driving him to the surgery for nebuliser treatment...don’t seem to offer it in surgeries now. I never got to the root of his problems beyond general household dust, but I think I’m a bit more savvy now 🤞 Good luck 🍀

Please research magnesium deficiency and symptoms of magnesium deficiency also vitamins d3 k2mk7 have a close look at his diet plenty of fruit and vegetables and lemon water to keep him hydrated

Hi, thank you for your response, I will definitely look into this. He does eat a lot of fruit and vegetables as due to his egg and dairy allergies I cook everything from scratch and we eat a mainly plant based diet

Is he taking antihistamine? Cetrizine would help his allergies to dampen down. I’m v sensitive to lots of things,particularly perfumes and scented things. Cetrizine helps a lot.

Oh wow, thank you for this, he does take cetirizine in the summer as he has hay fever, but have always stopped during the other months as I didn’t know how good it was to keep taking and he does take other daily medication
