Sulphites asthma and tinnitus

Has anyone found that after eating foods containing sulphites makes their asthma and/or tinnitus gets worse..? I am also thinking that sodium laurel sulphate in hair dye, toothpaste, hair shampoo & conditioner possibly makes it worse too. Would be interested to know if anyone else has any experience of this. Thanks.

I know for certain that orange squash is a trigger for my asthma. I’ve put it down to the meta sulphates contained in it.

Never would have thought it might be in orange squash. Interesting. Thanks for replying.

Really interesting. I really like garlic but maybe it doesn't like me. Thanks, I'll try cutting it out.

This is not something I have even thought to consider, but I'm going to start trying to keep track.

Thank you for the heads up x

Yes, Sulphites been a huge allergen for me for years and they are everywhere - pre packed meat, bacon and sausage, diluted juices and cordials, certain sweets - it's definitely worth checking on the foods which you would normally eat x

Yes, sulphites do play a role in my asthma. I read labels religiously, and am glad that there are many uncured products now available that do not contain them. You bring up a good question regarding the sls in shampoo, etc.; I'd not thought of that before.

Yes, I’m sensitive to sulphites as well, they really make me wheezy and breathless.

All my life I’ve had to avoid lime cordial; now I’m a little older (!) I’m finding in addition to those mentioned by previous posters that pickled foods are an issue, and white wine - which is very annoying!

Sorry to hear that pickled foods and wine are new food and drink that you can no longer tolerate. I agree not being able to drink wine is frustrating, I hate going round to friends and having to say I can't have a glass of wine with them.

It seems that one food with sulphites in it may trigger a reaction for some of us but not for others. Or perhaps some people are generally more intolerant of sulphites and a wider range of foods may affect them. It seems to be trial and error to find out which ones affect us.
