Son asthma

My son is being treated for astma he has allergies and has 2 episodes of wheeze which resulted in hospital admissions he’s got a cold now and appears a little breathless and a few coughs now and then his nose is so congested we are currently on holiday so a bit away from home anyone any advice for when to strut blue inhaler ? He he appears well within himself just tired he’s two and a half so can’t tell me.. he’s on a preventer inhaler 100mcg brown.. can’t hear a wheeze and doesn’t appear to be breathing faster than normal totally new to all this but this is how he started the wheeze the last tome

Even if he’s not having bad symptoms ? I didn’t wanna use it unless he really needed it

This is a common mistake. This is a very safe Med and far safer than an asthma attack.

It will keep his airways open with the cold as having the cold may trigger the asthma ,

Ok so how often should you give the salbutamol every 4 hours ? Two puffs

Thank you, see I was gonna wait and see because it’s a new thing and he’s only developed these asthma’s signs recently and it was viral indicted a didn’t know if it was best to not treat and see how he is with cold then I can tell

Me Gp if he’s needing it during it or if am better just going ahead and starting it he doesn’t have an Asthma plan as yet but last time he had 5 puffs every 4 hours and sometimes 10! X

I would start now if hes *more breathless* than normal that instantly puts him in the yellow zone and you dont want to be there

I’m going by when u get a cold I start mine , with a little one they will keep going as they don’t realise what’s going on , by starting it now it will keep his airways open

Ok perfect thank you all, yeah a think he’s more congested than breathless if you get me like can’t breathe from nose but I’ve giving him one puff of his blue there thank you x

The four or five, or more, puffs at a time are usually for when symptoms are / not relieved being relieved with 2 blue/ or after a hospital admission as a step down.

Normally 1 or 2 (others may know more) puffs are given for wheeze or cough or other asthma symptoms. So do use it for wheeze.

Thanks you! He hasn’t got a wheeze at present just a bad cold and appears ok and doesn’t appear wheezy/ hasn’t had like coughing fits maybe 3 coughs in a whole day but I have bum the blue last night before bad one puff to just see if it helps him I don’t know should I continue them today one puff every 4 hours ? C

I would give 2 puffs and see if there's an improvement. If there is, I'd continue with 2-4 puffs every 4 hours, depending on need. Obviously, if he deteriorates, or you can't wean the blue back down again in a few days, then get him seen. You can't be too cautious with asthma.

Is this his first infection exacerbation? Because it could be that his symptoms are different with a virus or infection than with any other flare. It could be that he doesn't wheeze with infective exacerbations.

Don't panic. See how he is and trust your instincts. If you think he is struggling, give the blue inhaler but if he is running about much as usual, don't bother.
