I don't know if vit d deficiency is specifically asthma related or linked to long term conditions. I always linked it to my PCOS.

Vit D is hard to get naturally it is mainly gained through sunshine and sunscreen prevents it getting in system.

I was first diagnosed with low vit D on borderline level and was given calcichew to stabilise it then nothing for years. Started having problems asked GP to check it was very low she put me on very high dose for 3 months bloods took and it was back in normal range. Stopped the supplement and 5months later tested and was almost down to borderline losing average 3 measurement levels a month so am now on maintenance dose 800 iu twice aday

Hi

I’ve had low vit D diagnosed a few time. The last time I was at 24. My GP gave me vit D tablets both times. Long term it didn’t seem to make much affect for me but I know others that said it really gave them a boost energy wise.

I myself am usually shattered after work but that may be due to the asthma waking me up lots in the night/up early 😂

I take high dose vitamin d , the docs give u is next to useless to get numbers up , I take 5000 iu a day with k2 mk7 , u need this together with vitamin d to get to the places , he might also benefit from magnesium too, when I started in the winter I was on 10,000 iu a day but through the summer I take 5000 my numbers are up to normal but I carry in taking , I’ve not had an infection since doing this and don’t get that brain fog either

My vit D levels were 12 - a new record for the nurse at the respiratory clinic!!! I was told that low levels of the vitamin make you more susceptible to infections such as colds which for many asthmatics can be a trigger 😕

Mine was 19 (GP told me it was "in my boots") when they put me on high dose for 3 months - my current maintenance dose is 800iu twice a day so 1600iu daily.

I had the test because of pain and was putting weight on for no reason. At same time discovered folate deficiency as well so am now on folic acid too

My Vit D levels were v low. Dr gave me 50,000 IU of Vit D ampules per week for 6 weeks to bring it up. Now I take 1000 a day as maintenance.

Hi, best probably talking to your GP if his levels are really low and the best course of action. However for reference, you only need sunlight on your forearms for 20 mins for enough Vitamin D to be produced for 24 hours. So suggest he walks with his shirt sleeves up for 20 mins and then apply either sun cream or roll his sleeves down. Hope this helps.

That wouldn’t be enough if your deficient

Hi, after my last asthma excerbation I was told I was vitamin d deficient and had to take tablets for a week. My bloods were reveiwed after this and I was told they were back to normal and no longer take the supplements. X

Get them to check again around 6-8 months after stop and get comparison now in normal to then

I think Vit D deficiency is a side effect of some of the asthma meds.

Last winter I took D3 x 4000iu/day after researching online.
