I am lucky in winter but not spring or summer as I have hayfever

I have the most horrendous hay fever, resulting in me finally being diagnosed with asthma this summer, I was hoping this winter would finally give me a bit of respite but haven’t! (The joys of working in a nursery!) I am on my 2nd cold virus in as many months, the last one lasted the best part of a month and only went when I was given antibiotics as my ear had become infected, and steroids to settle my asthma, which helped to open my sinuses! I can totally sympathise with permanently feeling stuffy nosed! Have you tried things such as nasal rinse sprays? I also take Avamys for my hay fever so I’ve been using that, been amazing dealing with the post nasal drip but hasn’t seemed to do anything for my sinuses! Hope you’re feeling better soon!

That is how I got told I had asthma about 3 years ago

I’ve had symptoms for the last 3/4 hay fever seasons... always got told it’s nothing to worry about and all in my throat... this year though was horrendous, I kept persisting with the drs and they gave me ventolin and did spirometry which gave the diagnosis! This is the first winter colds I’ve had that have caused symptoms though, it’s never been more than a bit of coughing when I’ve had a cold before!

I was given the blue inhaler to ease my breathing as they thought I had asthma. It was only when I went to the hospital as I was struggling to get my breath and that is when I got told I had asthma, in the same year and that is about 3 years ago now

Cold weather has always been an issue for me & this year is no different. Icy weather gives me real breathing trouble & I suspect when it's damp that probably fires up the aspergillosis problems I have as well. I've been on & off antibiotics & had my steroid dose increased often this last few weeks.

I have been so ill. I came down with something just before Christmas and I have just been given my third lot of antibiotics. I can't seem to shift whatever it is.

Sorry you've been unwell Emmasue. I have had three lots of antibiotics, two for sinus infection and the second lot cleared that and one for a urinary infection. But I am finding the cold weather really affects my chest and nasal passages.

I think when the immune system has an extra battering it doesn't bounce back so easily. Like Starveycat the spring brings additional problems with allergy to birch and hazel. One friend of mine said I should wear a bubble suit, like a space suit to keep me away from all the triggers!

I don't do very well with my asthma this time of the year because of the cold. The summer can be just as bad, especially if it's humid and it's too hot! You might have allergies too, so it's worth getting tested. My asthma specialist recommended taking antihistamines all year round and I find it helps. My asthma isn't too good at the mo though, because I have a chest infection AGAIN! So I'm on Doxycycline and steroids again! ☹️

Get well soon

Hi Emily61,

Thank you so much! At the moment, I'm on antibiotics for a chest infection. So it's lovely Doxycycline and steroids on the menu.

I must admit, going to work early and coming home at night in this weather, makes my chest really tight because of the cold air. By the time I get home, I'm coughing and wheezing like anything. Hope you're as well as you can be too! 🙂

Went out without my scarf just to put recycling out chest tight hate this westher but glad to be alive

Ha - that’s what I did Friday (but to check the gas)... cue an overnight stay in hosp 😅. My lungs like autumn (usually Sept/Oct). Not too hot, not too cold. None of my allergens in the air, nor is it cold and flu season. I’m like bloody Goldilocks 🤣. Dreading the high, cold winds and rain/snow forecasted for the next week or so but hoping that I’ll get through without needing to go anywhere again!

Hope you are all well regardless of the horrid weather x
