Hrt and increase asthma?

Good morning.

I wanted to ask others here, who are or have been on Hrt, if they noticed it making there breathing worse?

Or have you found being in more stressful situations makes your asthma and breathing shallower and worse?

Yes i've been feeling this lately. I did read that taking Hrt, the Estrogen Everol patch and the Progesterone Utrogestan capsules can increase your asthma symptoms.

I have been debating whether to come off Hrt for the moment to see if my breathing gets better.

Also i have been very depressed while taking Hrt, suicide thoughts, and hrt/menopause depression. Which i'd never had suicide thoughts before getting menopause depression, anxiety. It's been really a tough time mentally.

Look forward to any replies in response.

Becky

Hi Becky

Have you spoke to your gp about the dosage of Estrogen you are on, it may need reducing or the patches replaced with an oral method such as Progynova 2mg.

I take 6mg per day of the Progynova & have never had any problems with it effecting my asthma infact I’ve found its made my symptoms less.

As for the depression & anxiety your having that could be that your levels of estrogen are low.

Obviously my meds are for a different reason to what you use estrogen for but I find myself a lot calmer & stress less.

Definitely talk to your gp & see what he/she has to say.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Merry Christmas x

Hi Pal7165. Thanks for your reply.

I have recently upped the dosage of the Everol patch to 75 from 50. Highest dosage is 100. I asked it to be upped as it wasn't working enough.

I only wanted to stick with body identical hrt estrogen and progesterone, and an expert (not a GP, as alot of them dont know enough about Hrt). I was told by the expert that Everol patches are the only estrogen based one which is a 'body identical' product tht is made from yam vegetables, and molecularly it totally matches our original estrogen molecular structure which we produce naturally. All the others estrogens are made of synthetic estrogen, and they aren't a molecular match so i was told.

All the other estrogens which are not body identical and they give you worse side effects.

I just looked up Progynova and it says it contains the active ingredient "estradiol valerate is a synthetic estrogen and hence is an agonist of the estrogen receptor (ER), the biological target of estrogens like estradiol. It is an estrogen ester and a prodrug of estradiol in the body. Because of this, it is considered to be a natural and bioidentical form of estrogen."

But it is a synthetic estrogen and possible side effects are:

"Breast pain and tenderness.

Vomiting.

Weight gain.

Dizziness.

Depression.

Back pain.

Headache.

Vaginal discharge with no odor."

But if you didn't have any bad side effects from it, then that is encouraging. Thanks for telling me about Progynova (estradiol) tablets and they have made your asthma better..

Maybe it is worth me looking into synthetic estrogens. I am usually allergic to so many drugs.

Are you as well? With having asthma, does it make you easily allergic to other prescribed medicines?

I did talk with a GP last week, he is so nice, and helpful and caring. He did up my dosage, and did say to come off hrt for awhile and see how it makes me feel. As that is what i decided to do during the consultation with him, and he agreed i could just come off them straight away. There would be no withdrawal side effects.

Thank you for your reply, you made my day.

Merry Christmas.

Hi again Becky

Progynova has definitely worked wonders with myself, I’ve been very fortunate not to have any side effects from the med, but it’s like all meds, if you read the info sheet on all meds they all carry long lists of side effects so you have to way up the advantages against the disadvantages.

I take the Progynova because I have gender dysphoria & along with spiro it has made a big change to my life, my asthma is practically clear, I have no wheezing on a night anymore, no constant coughing & very rarely if not at all do I find myself reaching for my inhalers.

Also another plus is, my Psoriasis has just about cleared up aswell, I can actually see normal skin on areas that are normally covered with psoriasis so estrogen in the form of Progynova has upto now worked brilliantly for me.

Hi again Pal7165

It's great it's worked wonders for you. Yes and Hrt and very possible life treating side effects, even the body identical ones with cancers and strokes etc.

That's brilliant its helped you with you gender dysphoria.

You sound like a really nice, interesting person, i have my own physiological issues complex ptsd. Would you fancy chatting sometime somewhere else for a bit?

I am on HRT and have been diagnosed (sort of) with adult onset asthma. I’ve wondered if my HRT meds make the asthma worse. I do an estrogen spray (evamist). I have yet (since this started in June) been able to stop coughing entirely.

Have you tried different HRT? Feeling suicidal is a pretty big deal, maybe you could talk to your gyn?

Hi. I'm sorry to hear if the Hrt meds you are on, if you think they either are making your type of adult asthma/breathing difficulties, or if they are helping relieve asthma symptoms but not relieve it totally as you still have a cough... Did you have the cough before?

I just looked it up so what you are currently taking is 'estradiol transdermal spray.' So it could give you side effects of

"Nausea/vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, headache, or weight changes."

Have you experienced any of those symptoms written above at all?

To answer your question. I've only been on a body identical estrogen, apparently it's the only one which isn't made synthetically, which means it has the same molecular structure as the estrogen that we produce naturally in our bodies ourselves. And so it's meant to create less bad side effects with taking it, so an expert told me. (Not a GP).

Yes you're right suicidal thoughts is a big deal, and scary. Have the one your on ever given you suicidal thoughts?

I don't have a gyn, only GP and FB page menopause, hrt support from other women, and other experts which reply to your questions.

Thank you for replying..

I’ve been on this HRT for awhile, so it is not likely to be causing my asthma cough. This form of HRT causes me the least side effects, by far! I have not had suicidal thoughts from this, but have struggled with depression and anxiety. It can all be scary and overwhelming. Be sure to talk to someone and make sure you get a new med, if needed.
