A rough month Cough Variant Asthma

Hello all,

I suffer from cough variant asthma. My big triggers are cold air and cold beverages. I've had it since I was 15 and caught a cold. Before I got on any meds to treat it, the cough used to get so bad I would vomit from coughing too hard. Only then would I finally cough out mucus allowing the cough to subside *before it inevitably gets inflamed again.

I've been able to maintain it pretty well over the past 1.5 years using albuterol (ventolin/blue inhaler), montelukast, and symbicort if it got bad.

However, a month ago I caught a cold and started coughing very badly and had to go to hospital. Got a nebuluzer treatment there. Over these past four weeks I have been using nebulizer, symbicort, montelukast. Also finished a 5 day course of 40mg prednisone.

Lungs still feel inflamed and feel urge to cough. It's still not the same as it used to be.

Wondering how long it will take to get back to normal :(

Hi

It can take between a couple of weeks to a couple of months to fully recover after an attack, however if you’re still feeling ‘twitchy’ it may be worth booking to see your GP/asthma nurse as you may need your meds changing/increasing or need something extra.

Here’s some advice from asthma UK about recovery;

I hope that helps and that you start to feel ‘normal’ soon x

Were there any new triggers which may have exacerbated your condition? My mind goes straight to a microbial exposure. It sounds to me like you've been exposed to microbial contamination, which is a combination of mold, bacteria, virus and the volatile organic compounds they emit. That can cause the horrid increase in symptoms you're describing and without resolution. If you're still around it, the symptoms will persist and worsen. Look under sinks, any signs of visible mold anywhere? In door tracks? Windows? Bathroom?

We tend to think of bacteria as a problem and also virus and we cannot see those, yet they are lethal. Yet we often don't treat mold seriously, yet it is the same type of size initially as bacteria and virus, yet by the time it's visual, can you imagine it's power to cause health damage? Even in Leviticus the bible warns about the deadly power of mold/mildew and how the only way to remediate is full removal of all affected materials or demolishing of structure and removal.

I can't even breathe properly near a common household drain since being exposed to microbial contamination in a water damaged building for just short of a month, it triggers the most terrible symptoms and I'm continually holding my breath at sinks now. Once sensitized the body doesn't forget it, it's learned for survival.

God's speed, hugs and love
