Has any one been prescribed carbocystein for their asthma. I have been given this recently but haven't yet taken any as I thought it was only given to people with bronchiestacis?

Hi

I used to take it, and now take it intermittently when I have URTIs (viral or bacterial) and have lots to cough up!

It is usually for COPD or bronchiectasis but if you have asthmatic bronchitis (increased mucus production when asthma is symptomatic) then it may be prescribed simply because it makes it easier to cough up the gunk by reducing viscosity (so you’re less likely to cough yourself into an attack, or cause other issues like muscle stains and rib fractures from coughing so much!).

Hope that explains why you’re on it! Give it a try - it might help! X

Hi

I take this medication and it helped so much with my coughing .... so I usually cough a lot before I can clear it... once I was given this medication I only cough abit and can clear it . Depending on how unwell I am with asthma depends how much I take , initially it was double dosing 6 375mg tabs a day .. when I’m well I reduce this too 3. They allow me to decide and give me extra if I ask on next order of medications... try it and see it has made such a difference to how I cope with Asthma.
