Prednisolone

Just wondering if anyone can help really! I've been on Prednisoline now for 7 weeks at 40mg a day (every time I try to reduce I get extremely wheezy again and the doctors put me back up!) I've had six admissions to hospital in the last year and from my last admission things just seem to not be improving.

I've got an appointment at the outpatient respiratory department at the hospital coming up in the next three weeks however I just seem to be in a loop of trying to taper off steroids to be put back up again! Has anyone had a similar experience or any advice on what to do next to try and get back control?

. One of the things I do during my flare up is drink turmeric 1/8 tsp honey put a slice of ginger ... I drink it all day at least eight cups... I started looking into spices and herbs . Look into alternitvies... People some times only think of drugs I go with herbs and spices before I go to drugs.remove all mucus forming foods google it.. Like milk cheese process foods...We are so condition to think drugs and not alternitive..... Put blocks under your bed not good for your lungs to sleep flat when your having lung problems.. Your breathing goes more shallow....

Finally someone who is similar to my approach! I had a flare up this summer that was 3 months long. After being being subscribed inhalers and prednisone with minor results (I too would snap back after trying to wean off prednisone) I began thinking out of the box out of desperation to get well again. I started boiling fresh peeled and sliced ginger root, turmeric root with lemon (with local honey)

drinking it in the morning and evening. Other things I did that also helped me tremendously were:

Working on my immune system and my adrenals. (Garlic, Oregano, Vitamin c, D3, B complex, probiotic, liver detox (to lower histamine levels) adrenal. and omega supplements DAILY. I then discovered mullein tea which also REALLY helped my symptoms. Finally, I truly believe that BLACK SEED OIL (cumin seed) was the finally piece of the puzzle that ended my asthma. I heard about it from a friend and thought it sounded crazy but after 4 days of taking it twice a day I no longer needed my inhaler or my prednisone! It was miraculous. Lastly, I urge you to google is breathing techniques to ease your asthma. Focus on breathing through your nose and not your mouth. Eliminate dairy and move toward plant based diet. Commit to this for at least a few months and I’m almost certain you will notice improvement. Summarizing this,

**Build immune system, try ginger/turmeric/lemon/mullein teas with local honey, eliminate dairy, eliminate meat, practice breathing techniques for asthma, and take black seed oil! I truly hope you find this approach to help as much I did. I feel compelled to tell every person I know my story because it felt like nothing short of a miracle to finally not be a slave to pharmaceuticals! Best of luck to you.

And I agree with “clamdigger” sleep elevated.

Do you mind giving me your exact recipe for the brew of turmeric and ginger? How much water added, etc?

Honestly you can’t go wrong, but I peel a small piece of ginger root and use about 5 slices. The turmeric root is much smaller but I peel it and use two small slices. I also throw in 3 slices of organic lemon. I add this to 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. I turn off the heat then cover for about 20 minutes. Pour it through a strainer. Add 1 spoon or honey (local if possible) and drink. The turmeric and ginger have wonderful anti inflammatory properties. Also, consider Mullein herb for tea. This helped the mucus in my airway. Drink these thing daily. Hope it helps! I carry tea with me most the time.

Thank you so much! I’m going to try this. Do you take it when you are well too or just when you have a flare?

I drink it about 3 days a week now. During my flare up I drank it morning and in the evening. Also, I strongly suggest Mullein. You can buy it on amazon or Etsy. Preferably organic. Take about 3 tablespoons of Mullein herb into a French press and add 2 cups of hot water. Let it seep for 5-10 minutes. Add a tablespoon of honey. This REALLY helped me.

I started looking into Ayurvedic medicine (“Ayurveda” for short) is one of the world's oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. I use the herb called neem you can get at the health store I put it in oil and heat it up to really warm were your body can handle it.. I sit in the bathroom rub it all over my body and hair give myself messages to get toxins out then a hot shower. They use neem in India this way to get out toxin......... I have a inferred sauna it helps with blood flow and detox......... . India is great for herbs and spices I started using there spices in my cooking......... PLus Onion seed with honey every morning is what a man from India told me his family every morning take a tsp of onion seed with honey.. Check out Ayurveda on youtube loads of information there...

Yes, I too looked into Ayurvedic medicine. My friends family owns a Ayurvedic center near my home. We recently built a house in which we included an infared sauna! Initially, my interest was for my son who has autism but this has ended up being wonderful for the whole family. The onion and honey makes sense to me. I’ve been crushing a clove of garlic and taking that with honey or sometimes I’ll make garlic milk using almond milk. My friend who owns the Ayurvedic center suggested. I’m so glad to finally find someone on this forum who has found success outside of pharmaceuticals. I feel like it’s nothing short of a miracle.

Wow your lucky to have knowledgeable people in your life .. I read a lot about it for a few years seen a documentary on a women from England that went to India to get treatment .. it was on youtube.... .. I got a inferred sauna about ten years ago .. Its great for getting rid of toxin in your body.... One thing I like to do is take neem and heat it up in olive oil rube it all over me and my hair sit for about 20 min then take a hot shower.... Learned that one on the documentary.... the closes place that practices Ayuveda is in Halifax it about 70 min away but it causes 175.00 for the visit... Were I can't afford it I have been studying it for a while on my own ... I"m a Pitta /Kapha bit of both...But it does work keeping down the amount of drugs I used to take... Great stuff

Liquorice is not recommended while on prednisolone as it increases the strength of the drug

Thanks, I didn't know that.

Ugh I have been in that cycle! Very frustrating. I have broken the pred cycle because it turned out not to be helping so I got off pred but still have asthma issues. Obviously you need to be addressing the asthma In order to really break it. If you have raised eosinophils and/or IgE you may be eligible for one of the new treatments to help you get better control without steroids, and can ask at your appointment- though you may need to be referred to a specialist asthma clinic who can do various tests and look at what's going on overall (e.g. allergies setting things off, optimising non-steroid treatment). I have seen physio to sort breathing pattern a lot and Buteyko *can* help reduce steroids in some people but doesn't work for everyone.

Maybe contact the Asthma UK nurses to.talk things through and get ideas of what to ask about at your appointment and what the options may be.

Reducing High Dose Pred after several weeks often appears to require a ‘very slow’ Taper. For example, reducing by (say) 2mg, then staying on just that 2mg reduction for a full week or two before trying to reduce by another 2mg for a similar period. Many folk try to reduce by (say) 5mg a day, which can work for a some, but not for others. So maybe the Taper you’ve tried has resulted in reducing by ‘too much too soon’. Something to perhaps discuss with your GP.

I was in a similar situation last year - I was 8 weeks on prednisolone and had flare ups every time I tried to reduce them. When I saw the respiratory consultant he prescribed me extra inhalers, antihistimines and monteleukast, increased the dose of the inhaler I already had and then stepped me down off the prednisolone over two weeks. It did help - although I did have lethargicness while I was reducing the pred dose, my asthma didn’t flare up.
