Hi,
I have asthma and currently on tiotropium and symbicort I seem to be super allergic to dust which causes me a huge load issues like post nasal drip which cause phlem and voice issues. The do for gave me this a while ago to try but never took it as I heard alot about side effect. Would this drug help my condition? I'm so tempted to try it as this nasal drip is doing my coconut in. Hi, I've taken montelukast for over 2 years now and find it really effective with no unpleasant side effects. I'm very allergic to things and for people who are very allergic it tends to work really well. It does not suit everyone but would be worth giving it a try if your Dr's recommended it.

Be aware it gives a headache lasting a long time. I tried very hard for montelkast to work but no joy!
I gave up after a week I just doesn't sit well with me. I get extremely agitated and angry on it.
All montelukast does for me is give me heartburn been on it for 3 months no change to my asthma .
Yes, horrible heartburn! Although it worked very well.
I’m on Zafralukast now, heartburn is better controlled, & zafralukast also works well. Starting it was a game changer for me...
I must ask my asthma nurse if I can be prescibed Zafralukast instead hopefully the heartburn will disappear because it keeps me awake most of the night .
I think montelukast is a bit of a marmite drug - people seem to either love it or hate it. I suspect which side you come down on probably depends on the extent to which you get the worst side effects. Personally, I'm a fan - it has contributed to tackling my fairly severe asthma symptoms & keeping me functional. It also helps me sleep I think, but obviously, some people report that it causes severe sleep disorder.
I don't think it will necessarily do anything for the post nasal drip though - I get it fairly regularly in spite of the montelukast.
Hi. I'm in the same boat! Severely allergic to dust and always have winter asthma. Been prescribed it but only bit the bullet this week. Let's see how it goes but am a bit scared as I'm so tired of being unwell. I hope you've done something about dust though: I have no curtains, anti allergy pillows, duvet, mattress cover, change sheets and towels at least every week and if clothes are outside wardrobe, don't wear. Also, air purifier in the house! Even cheap ones make a difference. Do away with fabric as much as you can like in car and couch and wash carpets regularly or rip them off!
I haven't gone that far with the dust thing but I should defo looking into it.
I’ve been on it for about six weeks and initially it was fantastic, really helped my asthma, but this last week, all my usual symptoms have returned 😕. I sleep really well though!
I too am allergic to house dust and use mometasone furoate nasal spray every day to reduce nasal drip with great effect. Good luck and keep well.

Hi DeanSamson, one squirt in each nostril once a day is very effective for me at the moment. I’ve been using it for 6 months. Usually by this time of the year I have a constant nasal drip triggered by spores, dust mites, damp, cats-but I’m coping really well now and nasal drip is almost non-existent. I hope it’s as effective for you.
My Gp told me to take 4 in each nostril 🤭
Yeah, you usually start high and reduce as meds build in your system like inhalers for asthma.
Positive outcome for me. For years had bad chest infections every winter. Hardly any since being on Montelucast. Also use Qvar and Serevent inhalers plus rescue inhaler ventolin. Montelucast dosn't suit everyone though so think its a matter of trial and error.
I'm on the "hate it" side of the Montelukast debate. I tried it last year and most definitely ended up with very nasty side effects of the neuropsychiatric variety. I'd say give it a try, and if you find after say 2 weeks that it's not making any difference, or that you're noticing any significant side effects, then have a re-think.

I have taken it for a few years and honestly can not praise it enough , before I had it I couldn’t breathe in bed very well and kept having to sit up to get air . Hope that helps xx
I tried montelukast and it works good but couldn't afford it at one dollar a pill ..
I've been taking it for ages. Without it, I'm up at night with asthma. I really know about it when I run out. So a big yes from me. I always swallow them with lots of water as they do give you awful heartburn if you don't.
Also, what an amazing name for a drug. I always think it sounds like a principality in the Mediterranean. Its other name Lukasm also makes me giggle inappropriately. We asthmatics have to get our fun somewhere. 
I think the 'Mont' bit comes from Montreal where it was developed - I have no idea though about the rest of it!
It comes from Leukotriene, which is the chemical released during an asthma attack that is responsible for bronchoconstriction. Montelukast is a luekotriene receptor antagonist - basically is gets in the way of the leukotriene and so helps to reduce / prevent the narrowing of the airways - or something like that!

It's a YES from me. Atopic for many many years. Last year huge nasel/sinus problems. Montelukast been brilliant. No blocken/runny nose since taking it and it's relieved some eczema itching!
Had no side effects.
Hi I have been taking Singular for years and haven't had any problem-I am in the US.I also take allergy pills and I recently started taking Stiilolto inhaler which if you feel really tight in ur chest works quickly! The side effect is that it makes you very shaky. I also take Benadryl when I have allergy symptoms. Also if you have mucus in ur chest u shiud take a , expectorant
I used to take montelukast. No real issues other than vivid lucid dreams, stopped because I seemed to stop benefitting from it after a while, tho initially I did help calm down my night asthma symptoms. I’m also allergic to dust (among other things 😅) and found the best thing for my PND was a nasal spray (avamys) - not sure if monte will help for the PND tho. If the monte doesn’t help, maybe try asking your doc about alternatives.

I take my Montelukast in the morning ( my consultant told me to ) as I struggled with sleeplessness when I took it at night , I’m also on ventalin inhaler , Respimat and seratide ,

I,be been taking montelukast for years and haven't experienced any side affects ,you can only try it and see how you respond
I’ve been on montelukast a few months now along with spiriva and fostair and have no probs with it although I still have pnd but I don’t think it’s supposed to help with that .i have atopic asthma and actually work with my trigger which is paper dust prior to taking this I was struggling to get my pf above 400 but now even with a cold it’s stayed above 420 so I’m well pleased with it .
It has helped me for years and I am not aware of any side effects.

Hi guys well I have tried it and it's not for me. For some reason it gave me psychological effect. I went really Moody and wanted to argue and bicker with everyone I have it a few weeks and stopped it. I have since been to the respiratory specialist and put me on 8 weeks of prednisolone at 10mg a day which is helping loads. I'm planing on Monday to reduce my symbicort and see how it goes. I can't believe how much montelukast effected me hahaha thanks for the replies. Dean
Yep, it really did mess with my head. It's almost a year now since I stopped taking Montelukast, and I'm still being treated for what was a very severe depression.
