2yr old with monthly hospital admissions and steroids

My 2yr old son is admitted to hospital every 4weeks for his increased work of breathing. A couple of nights in hospital, steroids and nebulisers usually sorts him out, until the next month.

He is on montelukast, cetirizine, salbutamol (as required) and has tried all preventive inhalers (including those unlicensed for children) but now the Consultant is suggesting we just wait for him to grow out of it and just treat the monthly episodes.

With over 20 admissions and being unable to break the monthly cycle I wondered if people thought this was a reasonable suggestion or if anyone has any other ideas how we can manage this situation? Thanks

Uncontrolled asthma is dangerous because it leads to permanent airways damage.

So it's extremely important to control it and prevent exacerbations.

Try to to ask for a referral to a pulmonologist.

Some kids are treated with nebulized budesonide and ipratropium on a daily basis.

Thanks Bobcat, I shall certainly look into a referral and the treatments you have suggested. I just felt so hopeless with medical staff telling me there was nothing more they can do.

If your current doctors can't help, it doesn't mean no one can. Try to ask for a referral to a lung specialist. Managing asthma can be difficult, but it must be done. The right combination of medicines can do wonders.

I assume your son is using his inhalers with a spacer + a mask, so it might be useful to check his inhaler technique. Inhaler technique is a crusial thing here, because only with good technique patient can receive the right amount of medecine per dose.

You can ask your doctors to check his technique.
