Hello , I heard monday I have "asthma" from my doctor. I got salbutamol but it doesn't work so I'm making an appointment to get some new meds. The thing is, it doesn't seem to look like I've got asthma. I got a constant pressure on my chest. I also wheeze. Now it doesn't get worse if I get near smoke. Can somebody clear this up? Or can you give me more information about this?

Ps, I have hayfever.

Hi L573

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are undergoing a trial of treatment, you can read more about diagnosing asthma in adults here: bit.ly/2qfBfGf It's important to keep taking medication as prescribed.

Pollen has been particularly high this week, and if you do have asthma, can make it worse. Here is some information on hay fever treatments: bit.ly/2troIRQ

You can find out more about potential triggers such as smoke etc here bit.ly/2snLpp4

Do give the Asthma UK nurse team a call on 0300 222 5800 (M-F, 9-5) or WhatsApp chat on 07378 606 728.

Hope that helps,

Dita

Constant pressure and wheeze would fit well with an asthma exacerbation/attack.... if it was me (30+ year asthmatic) and ventolin wasn't working the gp would insist I be seen sooner rather than later (as it normally gets worse for me over the space of a day or two)

Hmm. Sounds like this might require further investigation. Seems pretty common for GPs to diagnose asthma or COPD on very flimsy evidence without referring for proper tests. Having said that, Salbutamol is well- tolerated and is a simple first line treatment if asthma is suspected, but if it doesn't seem to be working, I would suggest persisting until you get referred to a specialist. It took me 6 years of incessant winter colds and chest tightness to finally get referred, but I now feel confident that my respiratory problems are under control - hope you get a more speedy result!
