Acid Reflux Solutions

Day 10 of taking ompreloze and I still feel sick an hour or two after eating. I know it will take time for the medication to work on it (2-4 wks). I taking an anti acid liquid over the counter too on the advice of my friend who is a nurse. I have taken this before and it worked straight away. My GP thinks its the prednisolone course taken in January (7 days).

Any other things that I can take to reduce the sickness and treat the constipation (side effect of omeprazole).

I was told to completely cut out caffeine and dizzy drinks. All I can say is that it is easier said than done! Why is everything that tastes good so bad for us? 😝

Neither one of these drinks are part of my diet for other medical reasons.

How about chocolate?

elanaoali profile image

No can't eat chocolate either only white chocolate so not very often. Or onions, peppermint tea or tomatoes or other things that are the culprits.

Wow. What do you do for fun? 😒

I am not supposed to have these things either but I am finding it hard to avoid temptation. I need to be more disciplined. 😞

Eat very good white chocolate! Except it as if I don't I am in pain if I stray. Best fun of late was sledging on my birthday on Saturday. :-)

Now that's fun I could enjoy! Unfortunately I missed it because I was ill. Oh well. I am taking the kids ice skating at Easter so will have to look forward to that. x

This is very familiar - or it was. I’m now improving (after on and off bouts of problems for the past eight years). But at least my consultant and I are now in agreement as to the likely culprits - and asthma actually isn’t one of them. Hypermobility syndrome, suspected food intolerances and the menopause are reckoned be the most likely cause.

I’ve actually found that most of the time I don’t miss chocolate now, and the thought of coffee does nothing for me at all - not unlike going off it whilst pregnant actually. Like you I can have white chocolate, and a bit of really good white chocolate is a real treat.

Have you tried ranitidine? I got given omeprazole as a preventative for acid reflux (from steroids) but I swear it gave it to me! Since my GP swapped me to ranitidine I have almost never symptoms. It’s worth asking about or try if you haven’t already 😉. Otherwise it’s just general things like avoiding certain foods (if you know what makes it worse) etc.

Hope that helps and you get sorted soon x

I was on ranitidine but switched bro omeperzole when the ranitidine stopped working. I think they swap these medications to try to stay effective. x

Yeah, they use different ‘pathological pathways’ to treat the symptoms by reducing acid production (omeprazole works on the proton pumps, ranitidine on histamine), hence why one can work but not the other/why they switch between the 2!

Ladies you are very knowledgeable thanks for the advice. I going to bring up the incidence of acid reflux with my consultant who I seeing soon. Perhaps he has some ideas.

I have only been offered omeprazole and Lansoprazole. I tried Lansoprazole but it didn't work. So that's why I taking omeprazole it worked really well for me last year.

I must admit I never heard of prednisolone giving a person acid reflux until my GP told me about it. It is an unknown side effect I am going to try and avoid. My asthma has been particular bad this autumn/winter with one long course of steroids in November too. I hope and pray that with spring around the corner my asthma usually gets better to the point I don't know its there. No symptoms what so ever.

Not eager to go back to doctor to ask to try something else like your suggestion above. I want to give the Omeprazole a chance. I am tired of being on my doctor's surgery doorstep every five minutes. They know me so well. Its not just my asthma but I have another long term health condition which has made me very well know. This has mean more treatment at hospital with regular outpatient appointments at the moment. So you can see why I trying to sort it at home.

Ah sorry to hear that you’ve not been well for a while! Yes, reflux is one of a long list of side effects you can get from pred (esp if you take it often/long term) 😒

I completely understand wanting to give omeprazole a try, esp if you can avoid the GP if it works (I’m there often enough as it is just with my asthma, so I have sympathy if you have a ‘double up’ on chronic conditions! You must feel like you live there when they’re not behaving!)

Try the omeprazole, but if it doesn’t work ranitidine is just an alternative (you can also buy it OTC as Zantac! Alternatively there’s Rennie or gaviscon but I’m guessing you’ve already tried those (again OTC)

Hope the omeprazole does end up working for you x

Thanks for being so understanding sometimes I think I am on a piece of elastic between the doctors and home!? I am blessed to have a brilliant doctorsdb (rated outstanding), pharmacy right next to it. Plus home my home is 5 mins walk to them.

Sounds like you have a similar set up to me GP 5-15 min walk away (depending on breathing 😅) with walk in Surgery every morning (rated one of the best in the county), pharmacy next door to it and the hospital a 15-20 min bus ride away (usually quicker than an ambulance and I don’t like making a fuss 🤫😅). It’s much better than my old GP at my parents house!

I’m happy to be finally out of the ‘GP every week or 2’ stage myself, so hope you reach the same ‘achievement’ soon too 😂😅😢 (laugh so I don’t cry). Hope you start to feel better soon xxx

Try having yoghurt or those probiotic drinks. Especially when on steroids. They help to settle your stomach.

Unfortunately I can't eat yogurt or probotic drinks due to my other long term health condition. Thanks for the suggestion though.

You might find out if you have gallstones. I was treated for acid reflux for about 6 months which did no good at all, then, when in A&E with the pain, was put on a low fat diet until I had my gall bladder out. Now absolutely fine!

Hi I am sure I don't have gallstones as I had this problem before last year and the omperloze resolved it. I am glad you found out that it wasn't acid relux and got sorted.
