Hi there - deodorant contains lots of nasty chemicals. I react the same as you - my wife has to close the door & open windows to use it otherwise it affects me very badly. I think I would look for alternatives if you can.

Use a roll on instead? Or a more natural substitute. x

Its the chemicals you r breathing in . All strong smells affect me. Use simple roll on deodorant. It really helps. I cant sit near anyone with lynx or strong perfume or I start sneezing.

Perfume, smells of body products, house cleaners or lilies etc are one of my main asthma triggers. If I stay with them for long, I’m back to asthma exacerbations, steroid use etc etc. As has been suggested, unperfumed roll ons much better, damp cloth plus dry for dusting and polishing up, non-perfumed washing powder etc etc are staples in my life now. Well worth the changes.

I am unable to use any sprays. Especially aerosol ones. I use non -toxic cleaners ......Home Base have a good selection..... and a non perfumed roll on.

Air fresheners REALLY affect me. Whether plug ins or sprays. Febreeze affects me particularly badly.

I find that by not using anything like this in my own home I am more able to withstand other exposure elsewhere.

I only damp dust and wash the filters on my vacuum often.

Also I am very careful with my bedding.

Hope this helps. Easy once you get into the habit of no aerosols or smelly stuff!

That's not good, I use trust from Boots it's a cream it's great i would recommened

You should not use sprays with chemicals or anything with fragrances in and on and around you. If you are unsure, before you purchase it, ask a salesperson, Google it or contact the company that makes it to find out.

And, just to be on the safe side, check it out, outdoors, first, and not on your body where it will take some work to get the smell off of you.

It can be a lot of work just to research each and every product us humans use in our daily life, but when you have lung problems, that is what you must do, forever and from now on.

I also use roll on deoderant and find the ones without a scent to be the best. When I need to use hairspray, I use a basic pump spray rather than pressurised can as this also triggers my asthma or at least breathing difficulties. Also, I use steam to clean my home where possible however, sometimes chemicals can’t be avoided and like like many others on the forum, I suffer.

I suggest you take note of your triggers and start to avoid them , where possible.

Just avoid anything that comes out of a pressurised can of spray. And anything smelly. Today I went to collect my new glasses, and as I walked into the quite large opticians, there were the dreaded smells. I mentioned it to the nearest member of staff immediately, and considered talking to the manager about it, as I wasn’t sure I was just being fobbed off. The second member of staff, who clearly understood what I was talking about, said it was probably the stuff they spray on glasses to clean them, not high doses of air fresheners. At first I wondered about leaving immediately, but then I wouldn’t have got my glasses, and after some moments the smell wore off I am glad to say. But anything with VOC’s in them isn’t good, so that rules out most aerosols. And other stuff, too.

Hi Nick-niku,

Not being able to speak in a full sentence is very extreme. Make sure you have Ventolin nearby to prevent you from getting worse but also check with your doctor. Your reaction may be stronger than just an allergy. Spray deodorants are (to me) very toxic. I usually use my Ventolin immediately so not sure how I would be if I didn't take it. An unscented roll on may be your best bet. Check out health stores for ideas. I now use a natural crystal stick. It's okay but admit that it is not the best deodorant. I used to use the unscented Mitchum roll on which worked extremely well but changed because I wanted to stay away from aluminium. My advice would be to stay away from what you are currently using - throw it away or give it to a friend if you don't like throwing things away. It's not worth your health.
