Hi there. Newbie here So early November I caught a cold which turned into a chest infection...sinusitis then followed it. After two courses of antibiotics I thought I was on the mend...how wrong was I! The Doctor gave me Prednisolone to help my recovery but unfortunately sent me a little crazy. Three days later I was diagnosed with Bronchitis! That was early December and I was told to do literally nothing (which is a challenge when you have a son, puppy, husband, house to run, a business....) Prior to all of this I was a healthy, mildly asthmatic regular gym-goer.
At the start of January I felt more myself and ready to go back to the gym...but I knew I had to take it steady. The asthma nurse had moved me onto Symbicort which has really made a difference to my asthma. BUT this weekend....bam I feel like I have another infection lingering. Dry, non-productive cough, tight chest (although my peak flow is pretty good) and general grottiness. I will be absolutely gutted if the bronchitis is back again. I had blood tests last week as the Doctor wanted to make sure there was nothing more sinister going on (results came back fine) and I had a chest x-ray back in late November and nothing concerned him. Has anyone experienced this before? I mean I’ve had chest infections in the past but this is taking the mickey! I’m 39, healthy, a regular exerciser with asthma under control. What am I doing wrong?!? Sorry about the essay....

Hi, I'm 64 and have been through asthma/chest infection cycles many times. My asthma is allergy triggered and I started using a salt inhaler a month ago and it seems very promising so far.
Hi, No I haven't, I've been taking seretide for many years, it was a turning point for me but I think it is less effective now than it was when I first started using it. Do you find montelukast good? Is it steroid based?
Hello and welcome to the forum. There are some very knowledgeable people on here with fantastic information and I have learned alot, also as a relative newby.
If you feel that it is a chest infection again, it is worthwhile seeing the GP again as antibiotics might be needed or perhaps a sputum test to see which bugs are causing the infection, if any.
All I can say is that your story is my story! I caught a virus, not a cold but a cough, from my husband in early November and since then my asthma has been awful. I have had -4 lots of antibiotics, one long term to try and stop infection(it didn't work), 2 lots of steriods, which also made me mad (suicidal, anxious, weepy,angry and an insomniac), four changes of inhaler, some add on meds like montelukast and carbonestiene.
I saw a consultant privately at the begining of January in the hope of some answers and was started on a nasal spray and a reflux med in the hope that it was this triggering my asthma, neither has worked.
I am now on Symbicort but only since Friday, so am waiting to see if this works.
I have been told by my GP surgery that this is a rotten year for chest complaints and that once you have them the infection seems to be really hanging on or recurring and this is for people without underlying chest problems like asthma, so it would be fair to assume that we would be badly affected.Interestingly, my husband who has no problems with his chest has been coughing on and off for nearly 3 and half months and we both had a bad weekend with it.
I considered my self to have mild to moderate asthma, well controlled previously by Seretide. I am 55, never smoked and active, jogging, walking, riding my bike(we don't own a car so I use it for everything) but this has really knocked me for six.
You are doing nothing wrong. I think this is just a horrible virus/infection that is very long lasting. You will see if you read other posts that this is a reoccuring theme at the moment, lots of people like us. Roll on spring perhaps the warmer weather will help.
Hi as I have already posted my very similar story to you both above, elsewhere, I wont repeat, but just to say, I have exactly the same, and 3 antibiotics and 3 courses steroids later, feel very grumpy, weepy, miserable, angry, tired, exhausted, and generally at odds with the world, best laugh of the day was my son sending me a text with a coffin, and saying, don't go yet, as he cant afford the flights, at least that brought a smile to my face. Look after yourself, and be patient, we will recover.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. The Doctor listened to my chest on Monday and assured me it’s beautifully clear. I saw the asthma nurse today and she thinks the cough could be allergy induced. So I’m now trying montelukast which I did have some success with a few years ago. Fingers crossed this cough starts to subside! And yes most definitely roll on spring!
