It's always a bit risky cleaning inhalers, even the brands that tell you that you should, as in my experience - or perhaps incompetence - there's a risk that small droplets of water or dirt stay there, get breathed in & cause a bad coughing fit. If it's the twist-style inhaler, you can't test it either, as you breathe the drug in, rather than it being an aerosol or any pressure system.

If you've got a spare one, I'd bin the one you cleaned as I don't think they are designed to be taken apart; if not get a replacement. As always, probably better to be safe than sorry.

I clean my inhaler under running water so no risk of dirt. (Take the container out and rinse the whole of the outside). I think as long as you let it dry it should be fine? Then try one or two puffs. Always replace the cap to keep dust out.

I don't have a twist-style inhaler so have no knowledge of what the problems with cleaning might be.

No. You're actually supposed to clean the capsule and especially the plastic part regularly. Make sure it's dry before reinserting the capsule and prime it twice before using again. I also use a spacer which is dishwasher safe. That dry powder collects everywhere.

My understanding is that you do not take Symbicort inhalers apart, so you only clean the bit you stick in your mouth on the outside, and the cap. I must admit I don,t clean it - mine don’t last that long - as I can’t see how you can do an effective job on it. Also, as there are so many different inhalers I am only commenting on the Symbicort one.
