First major attack

leavemebreatheless profile image

I've had my first major attack last week, I ended up admitted to hospital for two nights. After bloods and x-ray was told I've pneumonia. I'm on my inhalers (dose was upped), antibiotics and steroids(predsna-something). I've had asthma for years but its always been mild and manageable. I'm still wheezing unless I lie on my left side (not a viable long term plan, I do occasionally wish to leave my bed). I had an attack this evening, not a huge one but its left me feeling tight and concerned. I've two more days of antibiotics and steroids and while the pneumonia seems to be improving the asthma doesn't seem to be, OR am I being impatient do I need more time? Can I speed up the process? I've to go an asthma clinic at the hospital in 10 days or so, should I be better by then?

Ok lots of questions and you sound like me 2 years ago when my asthma got worse from mild to now.

This just shows you that we are all capable of having an asthma attack even if it's mild.

Recovery takes time and you been through the ringer. Prednisolone is the rescue steroid so that is working on your inflamed lungs. Always finish course .Have you told anyone about this latest episode important ney very important to do so ASAP.

I am glad to hear your phenomenal is getting better. That will need carefully monitoring to make sure it's all gone,

what inhalers are you on? Just ventolin or preventive? Do you have an asthma plan? I.e what to do to manage your asthma? The wheeze will go when you are better.

I am glad you have an appointment in 10 days time this will review you and your mediation to get you over your attack and help you to control it.

If you are feeling at all unwell like the wheeze then make sure you get medical help, unsure ring asthma UK helpline for advice see asthma UK or.

Finally give yourself a break it will take time to recover both physical and mentally.

Thanks for the reply, I was a bit wound up last night and was giving myself a bit of a hard time. I'm on a becotide inhaler (they upped it in the hospital from 100 microg to 250) and I'm on ventolin. I don't have a plan but I presume that will be part of my clinic visit. I'm still gently wheezing but I'm not tight and feel rested this morning. I'm glad I found this forum, thanks again👍

Your welcome I hope and pray your appointment goes well next week. It could be worth you looking at asthma UK asthma care plan. It's the good standard of plans. It except by my doctor, asthma nurse and consultant. It could be worth thinking about your triggers and any questions you want to ask at the clinic. Your symptoms you are having now sounds like you're getting better. Onwards and upwards. Take care wrap up stay warm.

I was a long time recovering from pneumonia but they didn’t diagnose my asthma for 6 months afterwards. The infection will have irritated the heck out of you lungs. It does take time for that inflammation to calm down again. In my case it was months but that was without any asthma meds. Once I started the steroid inhaler it really helped. Be kind to yourself, your body has been through a lot. Don’t try to do too much to soon and give yourself time to heal. I hope the asthma clinic is really helpful for you when you go in 10 days time.
