Symbicort inhaler - Safe ? - New Here

I went to see my regular Doc, she was absent and a temp was in surgery. I had come thru about 2 weeks of persisent Asthma, mostly noctoral. And my usual Ventonin and was just keeping me out oe ER just about.

This Doc switched me to Symbicort inhaler and a tablet called Montelukast, Now I've read a bit I'm concerned I've made a grain leap from Ventolin which maybe is too much.

Any feedback on experiances with these drugs appriciated, as it scares me a little.

Thank you.

Hi jamesinDublin give it a try i take it every night and wouldn’t be without also good for allergies good luck keep us all updated 👌

Symbicort is a very well used and popular inhaler so it is safe to use. Of course there are possible side effects as there are with every medicine including paracetomol and aspirin. They are usually mild and there is no reason why you should have the rarer side effects.

Symbicort is a preventer inhaler (with also an element of reliever) which opens your airways. Ventolin is your reliever inhaler which you use as and when you are extra breathless. If your preventative inhaler is effective you shouldn't need to use the reliever one very much at all.

I hope this has helped a bit. x

lilaclil, Many thanks for taking the time to reply, very useful feedback. I'm new here and try to reply to posts when I think I can give my experiance. This is a very useful community, I wish I had found it a long time ago. Docs have 10-15 mins with you these days. Best Rergard and stay well.

Don't be scared. The medication is to control our asthma. Symbicort is a preventer inhaler, vital to keep your airways open. Ventolin is a rescue/reliever inhaler. If you use your preventer as prescribed you'll only need your Ventolin in emergencies so carry it with you.

I used Symbicort for years with no ill effects.

I also take montelukast nightly, it's for the allergic aspect of asthma. It's always handy to know what you're allergic to if anything - so that you can avoid it!

Good luck. P

For me, Montelukast made a big difference to my life, I have taken it for 3 years and feel tight chested the next morning if I ever forget to take it at night. They changed me from Seretide 250 to Symbicort 2 years ago. The first 2 weeks were awful- I used a whole inhaler, didn't have to go to a and e or get a nebuliser but was at the point where if I was exposed to any extra allergens I would have been in trouble. However since then it has worked quite well for me.

Just remembered, an initial side effect of Montelukast can be vivid/strange dreams. Not sure if I did or not......

I am on montelukast and symbicort. How are you taking your symbicort?

Symbicort is a combination inhaler, preventer and reliever in one. Has been v good for me.

I have been on symbicort inhaler and montelukast tablets for the last three years due to amount of flare ups I was having. It's really been a positive for controlling my symptoms. But still find if I get a cold or any kind of infection, my flare ups tend to be significant and last weeks. I would give it a go, as it's individual for everyone, but it may indeed help.:)

Symbicort made my asthma worse and singulair or the montelukast made me feel depressed. Hope you have better luck with it then I did. I started doing my own research and I am taking Liposomal Vitamin C which help me get my asthma under control.
