Neck surgery and asthma

Hi I'm new to this forum. I have cough variant asthma and need to have surgery which involves going through my neck to my cervical spine. My CVA is pretty much under control except when I get a cold. However, even when I consider it under control, I still cough a few times every day. At the moment the anaesthetist is saying I must be cough free for a week one week before the surgery date because of all the tubes they feed down the throat, and I think this is highly unlikely to happen. I have a slight cold at the moment but even if that clears up within the next week (unlikely with me, they always hang around for ages!) I know I will still have a cough. I've increased my preventer inhaler (Clenil) and trying to remember to use the salbutamol one more often. Not sure what else I can do to help myself? And has anyone with either normal asthma or CVA had similar surgery and how did you get on? I'm not worried about the actual surgery so much, just afterwards if I cough and it's painful or messes up the surgery itself. Any knowledge or advice very welcome.

Hi. Yes, I have had this op. At the time I had asthma dx (now bronchiectasis). Op went very well and anaesthetist was brilliant. Told her my concerns. I can't remember what they gave me but the cough was suppressed so no probs after op either. Good luck.
