Reducing pred

I had another dose of xolair yesterday (I have them every two weeks) and was told I need to start reducing my pred. I am on 40mg and have been for the last year. I'm coming down 5mg every two week. Am somewhat apprehensive. Just wondered if anyone had experienced this or similar and were you able to come off of pred without too many complications.

Xx

I have been on pred daily since 1991. Obviously maintenance dose has gone up over the years as asthma has worsened. I am currently on 20mg daily. When I increase I reduce 5mg per week till I get down to 25mg then 1mg per week back down to 20mg. Unfortuantely I was unable to get off pred completely. Was told that you have to reduce slowly so that your body can start producing its own pred again as it obviously stops when it is getting it orally for a length of time. Don't think after 26 years mine will start again so don't think I'll ever come off them completely but I do still hope to reduce my maintenance dose. Good luck, keep reducing by 5mg obviously taking into account how your chest is, if it's not improved stay on dose you're taking another few days then reduce another 5mg

Hi ..... I can relate to this situation despite being on xolair for 18 months and several attempts to reduce my daily pred dosage. Unfortunately my symptoms return at 20mg and I have to go back up to 30mg ....... I'm trying to reduce again by 2.5mg a day for a month and so on at the min ......... it can be tough and many atempts may be needed at baring dosages .....

Good luck with it all .....

Ah ok. I hope it works out for you. I have to say it has really helped as in the last year I have had 22 a&e visits and 7 hospital stays. Since starting it in February I haven't been admitted and only had 3 a&e trips. So although it's by no means perfect it has certainly helped. X

Yes I was on pred for 2.5 years and each time going below 10mg was horrendous. So it was 1mg a month after 10mg. I'd suggest you read Prednisolone and steroids withdrawal symptoms and make sure you tell them. I still had to go back up with infection or exacerbation of asthma but it's slow and low is the best way.

Just to add I was on max dose 600mg every 2 weeks and stopped xolair after 3 years. It felt it gave me no improvement despite them saying it did but my asthma nurse now said compared to others I'd not had results others had so she agreed with my decision.

Sadly since stopping it major flare up urticaria and also CT lungs shows some collapse in patches.
