Fostair 200/6 or 100/6

I've just been prescribed Fostair 200/6. Others who have problems with this strength have been put on the 100/6. I've been on Seretide until now. Should I ask my doctor to change to Fostair 100/6? before I start using it?

I'm on Fostair 100/6 and I have been really ill before going in this. I was on qvar and Oxus 12 for 15 years. Until I ended up in hospital with pneumonia the asthm nurse changed me to Fostair and touch wood I've been fine since. If your concerned contact your asthma nurse but I would give it a go. Hope it goes well.

I am also using Fostair 200/6 and never had any problems with it.

As you probably know, Fostair is a Duel Inhaler comprised of two Meds. As I understand it, the difference between the 100 and 200 is a doubled amount of the inhaled steroid. The Long Acting Beta Agonist (LABA) is, I believe, the same strength in both the 100 and 200.

I was on the 100/6 (one Puff twice a day) then switched to two puffs twice a day of the 200/6 because it was felt I needed to increase my inhaled steroid intake.

Problem is, when you go from one puff to two puffs, you're not only doubling your dose of the steroid, but also the dose of LABA.

For some people, increasing the inhaled steroid is probably wise, but those folk are compelled - at the same time - to double their dose of the LABA as (with all Duel Inhalers) you can't avoid doing that.

I've since reduced my dose of the 200/6 to one Puff twice a day which seems to suit me better and, hopefully, I'll be able to go back to the 100/6 (health permitting) sometime in the future.

It might be better for some patients to be on the 100/6 but supplemented by a separate Steroid Only Inhaler to give them the extra steroid without the extra LABA.

I came off Fluticasone in December as I was fed up with getting bad chest infections 5 or 6 times a year. Instead a consultant put me on Fostair 100/6 one puff night and morning. All seemed better for a couple of months but then I had a cold after which I needed my Ventolin inhaler three or four times each day. In May I had the most severe asthma attack I have had for years - Ventolin 8+ times and some Prednisone I had in a drawer. I went to see my asthma nurse who suggested I double my Fostair dose for a week and then go back to see her. I tried the double dose for five days: breathing no better and developed a really bad rash on face, neck and top of chest. Went back to the nurse and the outcome is that I am back on what I was on years ago: Serevent and Qvar. Now very happy as I haven't used Ventolin at all for two weeks! Fostair may work for some people but it doesn't for me.
