Hi there, This is a common problem with all steroid inhalers. I always make sure I rinse my mouth after using. Also if you are using an alcohol based mouthwash stop that. The problem with mouth wash (according to my dentist) is that it kills off all the bacteria in your mouth (good and bad) and so then the fungus can move in. If it is really bad you can get a prescription for Oral Nystatin from either your GP or Dentist, which should kill it off. If you have a great dentist, they can be very helpful about this. For me it comes and goes.

Thanks. Currently on Nystatin but not much improvement yet. Need to finish the course yet. The Dr also said I need to take Gaviscon for a week after not sure why?

I get that I thnk its unavoidable as the steroid kills the good bacteria in your mouth and throat. The only solution i found was using Fluconazole tablets from time to time you can buy these over the counter in a chemist for about £10

Personally i rinse my mouth spit then more water and suck it through my teeth spit then more water gargle spit more water rinse spit more water rinse job done. I take gaviscon to ensure that stomach acid does not harm my vocal chords hope this helps 😀

Apart from rinsing, I use oral dactarin, bought over the counter, as and when. Last summer when I was on a much higher dose inhaler I rinsed with salt water with a little vinegar in. It didn't cure it, but I am pretty sure it helped to reduce the problem. Dactarin works better, though.

I used to have thrush in my throat when I was on Symbicort. My GP gave me Nystan drops and Itraconazole antifungal tablets. You could ask your GP to do a swab to check it is thrush. I've had no problems with thrush since I changed my brown inhaler to Alvesco. Using a spacer and having a good gargle after you've had your inhaler should help as well. Hope it goes away soon!

My son gets this regularly and we go the pharmacy and get the nystan drops but you can't have them with in a month of each other. I did ask how long the bottle should last and was told as long as its not open for more than a few months it's ok.
