I have had those years ago and they worked well in fact now I think about it I was prescribed them twice as I was continually waking up in the night breathless. The second time I was on them for quite a while but was slowly weaned off them by the asthma nurse when my inhalers were changed to a different type which worked better for me.

Hi thanks for your reply ,do you mind if I ask what inhaler they changed you to ?

I can't actually remember what I had been on before now but because I had been so poorly the Doc decided to split the reliever into two inhalers as he thought one of the "ingredients" was not getting in properly. So, instead of the single reliever I had previously had I then had a Serevent Evohaler and a flixotide 500 (orange disc). Now as I have aspergillosis I have the Serevent and ciclesonide and that is working really well for me too.

Thankyou ,,,,I don't have any of those ,

Hi I have been on these a long time and have never had any problems. I take mine at night. My grandson (5) takes his in the morning cos they gave him nightmares. I take flixotide and serevent and ventolin. Also pyillocontin tablets. All for asthma. Best wishes x

Hi ,thanks for your reply ,,,,the reason I asked was ,,,I was put on a tablet of the same type called SLO-phylin ? a couple of years ago and I had nightmares like your grandson , but my consultant really wants me try it ,so maybe I'll take this one in the mornings like you ,I'm on ventolin inhaler, seratide inhaler, and Spireva ,but inworry as I also have medication for high blood pressure ,and under active thyroid ,,,,,,so I hope the misplaced ok ,thanks again ,

Hello Nanny1086. i sound very similar to you apart from the thyroid problem . I am on the same three inhalers and was prescribed Montelukast over two months ago. Unfortunately it didn't work for me and the reason I am up so early this morning is because of the dreams even though I stopped taking it about a week ago.

What I have realised is that my mucus problem is getting worse and I think it is dripping down from the back of my nose so this could be why my coughing is so bad. I had the cough from hell last winter and ended up with a bit of sinusitis so I think it has left me with more delights!

I have managed to get a GP appointment in a week's time so will see if there is anything different she can do to help me.

Very best wishes and I hope the new pill works for you. Many people seem to find it helpful.

Hi Sheila ,,,I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you ,,,,as for the nightmares ,, that was the side effect I had with SLO- Phyllin ,so fingers crossed it doesn't happen with this one ,,,,first night it happens I'll stop taking it as the nightmares were terrible ,( as you know ) not just dreams ,,,,,did you take it at night or day ? ,,,,

For the mucus I was prescribed a flutter devise its brilliant ,have a look on you tube ,I had mine from GP ,but you can buy them from Amazon if he won't give you one ,and it means I don't take mucodyne every day,,,,, ,,,,last December /Jan/Feb/March I had pneumonia and pleurisy and repeated chest infections , all that coughing caused me to have bowel and bladder prolapse ,I'm having on going treatment for that ,,,,,but I saw the consultant this week and to be honest he wanted me try oxygen , I flatly refused , as I know my levels were lower because with the other health problems I wasn't able to exersise, ,,,,SO I said give 6 months to get my levels up ,, ,, he said I'll give you 3 and also try the Montelukast,,,,, somthats where I am now ,,,, oh ,,,,I forgot to ask you ,,,,,have you done the pulmary rehab ?

Thanks for the help Sheila ,x💐

SheilaC in reply to Nanny1086

Thanks for your reply. I haven't done the rehab and am off to look up flutter device. I think the more research that I can do, the better prepared I will be for my GP appointment.

Nanny1086 in reply to SheilaC

Only me ,,,, if you ask the dr to refer you to pulmary rehab ,,,,honestly you WONT regret it ,I first did it back in 2008 ,and I've done it several times since after a bad infection etc. In fact i completed it again just a few weeks ago ,its all about exercise and your medication ,etc I believe they know far more about our health problems ( i.e.; chest /lungs) than dr ,it's an 8/10 week course twice a week ,loads of people have done it and I don't think I've read one comment to say it hasn't been of great help to them ,,,( maybe worth a mention to your GP ) good luck with your appointment,I'd love to hear how you got on ,best wishes Georgina ,💐🏋️‍♀️🙋

Nanny1086. I do not have COPD although xrays show something like that. One of our GPs has an interest in respiratory problems and she is sure I haven't got it. I am working in a charity shop this afternoon and will probably walk there (about half an hour). I do find that if we are given bags that are a bit mouldy (perhaps they have been in a garage) I start to cough.

I'm not sure about the device. I don't have a problem coughing up the mucus. It is just the embarrassment of being so 'chesty' when I am out. I was quite bad yesterday at a meeting with our knitting group.

Sorry, you came on asking for help and now you are helping me!

Nanny1086 profile image
Nanny1086 in reply to SheilaC

First let me say ,,,,we help each other don't we ,,so don't worry about that ,,,it's not just COPD that pulmary rehab covers ,and as your boarder line it might be of help anyway . As for the device ,like you when I'm coughing in public it can be embarrassing and you can feel the eyes looking at you and the comments being passed from one to another ,,,,I hated it ,THEREFOR ,,,,this is where the flutter comes into its use at the best ,,,,,you say don't have a problem coughing up the mucus ,,,,neither do I ,but I've found that using the flutter first thing in the morning it clears all the gunk that's way down at the bottom of your lungs where it's built up over night and where the bugs grow, and I don't need to have the embarrassing cough (as much ) when out and about ,I use it again when I get in bed ,

I was told by the COPD nurse that every human makes a cup of mucus every day ,normal ,people don't have a problem ,but us with chest problems it stays at the bottom if our lungs ,,,, and it needs to come up and out ,,,,hence the benefit of the flutter ,,,,it just makes it easier to get more up and out ,before them dam bugs grow, .hope this is helpful ,xxx💐

What is a flutter?

Nanny1086 profile image
Nanny1086 in reply to healthwish

Hi ,it's an item that helps move the mucus from deep in your lungs ,it looks a little like a mans small smoking pipe ,if you go on you tube you will see how to use it ,no medication is added to it you just blow, they sell them on Amazon to ,or your NHS GP ,they are brilliant especially if you have a bad chest infection.

I have been prescribed these and they do help me get through the night. I was told by my pharmacist to take them half an hour before bed because they dont break down well in the stomach - this is why it works for me and I don't get nightmares etc.

I've been on these a few months, I take seretide with mine. I was given as I was still having some breathing/wheezing (all the asthma usual..) troubles and my gp didn't want to give me anymore steroid medication due to the side effects ect. Took me a while to see difference and get more headaches now but looking back they are definatly helping, I no longer wake coughing or choking and haven't had to use ventolin so much, they didn't help over night but slowly yes, good :)

Nanny1086 profile image
Nanny1086 in reply to Amy2091

Thankyou Amy , I'm willing to try them ,,,, as the consultant suggested supplementary oxygen was an option I could consider ,,,,but that's not for me ,,,,I really don't feel the need for that ,,,,it's just my levels have dropped in the last 6 months and I believe it's due to lack of exersise,,,,,,so I'll give this pill a try ,,, ,thanks again ,

I have been on montelukast for 10 years. Asthma is stable. I take vitamins and magnesium and cod liver oil booster vitamins and no asthma issues. I still have severe asthma but it is controlled.

I had a road traffic accident about months ago and my asthma, usually not too bad, got out of control. I was prescribed Montelukast and after about 2 months everything settled down again. It's been great but I'm told it doesn't work for everyone

Nanny1086 profile image
Nanny1086 in reply to Cyclemma

Sorry to hear about your accident I hope you are now fully recovered ,I'm pleased montelukast was helpful to you ,,,I hope it has a good effect on me to ,

WHOA profile image

I would recommend you get checked by a lung specialist as I had a rta and my lungs were scarred.

Cyclemma profile image
Cyclemma in reply to WHOA

Oh wow, that doesn't sound good. Did they find that by investigation at the time of the accident? They didn't do anything scans on me. Even though I was taken in as major trauma I had to complain several times that my wrist was painful for them to reluctantly x ray it, and it was fractured.

I've just started them. For hay fever and asthma combined. Was full of cold in my sinuses - now drying out. Yay! Just a tickly cough now. All off my chest. *sigh of relief*

I have been on montelukust for years. I take two with my Tea about 6pm. The doctor told me they help your lungs open up to help you sleep. Do have problems some nights but generally ok

I tried both Montelukast and Accolate and neither helped my asthma whatsoever. The last option for me was regular medication that I'd have to have monthly at the hospital which I wasn't keen on so I'm still on 4 puffs of seretide morning and night.

Nanny1086 profile image
Nanny1086 in reply to BsRos1346

Thanks for your reply ,i really don't know why I'm being put on this medication ,but as I go by the theory that doctors know more than I do ,,,,,,intil other wise or until I think ,,,," no not for me " I'm prepared to try it ,my understanding after speaking to,the pulmary nurse is , The pill helps with the tiny air ways ,,,,we will see ,

Like you I'm on seratide 500 1 puff morning and night, also ventolin inhaler ,and Spireva in the morning ,,,,let's hope for improvement,

I had to take them for about a year but realised they weren't doing anything so decided to come of them myself. Then faked taking them until the hospital took me off them.

As with every medication it doesn't always work for everyone.

Nanny1086 in reply to TheOriginalSim

Hi ,I agree if you don't feel any benefit why take it ,,,we have enough medication we have to take don't we ,, I'll give it a try ,,,,when my GP gets round to writing the prescription thanks for your reply ,
