CS and alcohol?

Hey guys, I have a new question - how bad is it if I drink while I'm on corticosteroids? I know a lot of people here are taking CS, you can't tell me all that you never even take a sip!

P.s. I'm not an alcoholic, I'm just asking. :D

Honestly I never touch the stuff.

Have never been a drinker anyway but the last time I actually had alcohol was about 3 years ago and that was a cap full of brandy in hot chocolate.

For me it just increases the side effects of my other meds too much and isn't worth it. If they advise on the packet to avoid alcohol they usually have a good reason for doing so, so I don't have any.

Hi Diana it all goes through the liver which is under pressure with meds..I expect the odd glass of wine once a week is ok..

Well....I'm sure the technical answer is that it's better not to, and I'd be shot for saying this but I like a pint or two, especially on match days & rarely let the small matter of a life threatening illness & very strong medication interfere too much with that :D

Minushabens I'd probably have to be shot too... even more so than you, since I don't "like a pint or two"... I go straight to a double of something hard. Point is, the package doesn't tell me not to drink alcohol... but I guess Hidden is right about the liver... I don't really know right now... At first I used to get really sick from alcohol... but as I got used to the meds, that waved off.

When I was first being diagnosed with ABPA & various other things I was given a bucket-load of tablets, including steroids & ABs. I promised myself (back in January it was) that I'd not drink for a few weeks to give everything a chance to start working. Anyway I managed about 3 weeks! I think the truth of the matter is that alcohol slows down the effectiveness of the drug but isn't harmful (in moderation) in itself in combination with steroids. We're all different though in how our bodies work so that's just me & may not apply to everyone (just getting my legal defence in there!!).

The one time I was put on oral steroids (which was over Christmas) I did not drink anything alcoholic.  I should add that I was also on antibiotics and lansoprazole -  two more reasons not to touch the stuff at the time.

These days I can't drink alcohol, but when I was able to I wouldn't have done so if I was taking oral medication of any sort.

I get hot flushes drinking that stuff even when I'm not on steroids. Real ale & whisky is the best way to avoid it happening :-D

Yes, exactly - when I was on the highest doses I was sick even without alcohol... and when I had to take a sip of anything for someone's birthday, I got sick over ONE SIP! But later when my doses were put to lower I am again able to drink without problem and far more than a sip... So I was wondering if I just got used to the combination or it's not a problem anymore.
