Has anyone get any ideas on how to get rid of thrush in the mouth since using their steroid inhalers?

Getting rid of it is usually achieved by anti fungal medication - fluconazole for example - but you will need to see a doctor to get them prescribed.

Preventing oral thrush is another matter and reducing the risk of it occurring can usually be achieved by a thorough mouth cleansing routine after using your steroid inhalers. So for me this entails gargling and rinsing out with water (the gargling is particularly important), cleaning teeth and then gargling and rinsing out again after both morning and evening inhalers.

I've been told by one consultant that it is also a good idea to rinse out after using ventolin. Obviously this isn't always possible if you have to take it when you are out and about, but if you can do so apparently it is recommended. I don't know if anyone else has had this advice.

Thanks for that advice I have recently got oral thrush since using my steroid inhaler, never had it before, can you take the fluconazole for the tongue?

Don't know - I was put on it for oesophageal thrush but I know it is used for other types of thrush as well. You really need to give your local surgery a call and ask for an appointment to see your GP.

Thrush isn't pleasant and if you have it you really do need to get it sorted out.

I make my own live yoghurt with Easiyo eat loads. Can you recommend the one you use, do you eat it or put it on your tongue?

I always buy Yeo Valley. And I always leave on my tongue for as long as possible doctor also told me to eat frozen yoghurt as eases symptoms and takes time to melt.

The problem with alot of live yoghurt you can buy , if they have sugar or sweetened the sugar kills the live bacteria. Do you use a plain live yoghurt?

I do use plain

The yogurt I use is Greek Fage Total yogurt. No flavourings, no sugar, and available in full fat or low fat versions. I'm not usually a fan of natural yogurts (can't stand the taste) but I don't find this one too bad at all.

I had the same problem when starting to use steroid inhalers a few tears ago, but not since doing the following:

After using the inhaler, gargle with 2/3rd of a glass of water. Drink the remaining 1/3rd.

If out and about do the same with bottled water, if not possible to spit it out just gargle and then swallow the water. Maybe not optimum but it's worked for me at a push.

Yes I was told to rinse mouth out after using the steroid inhaler but doesn't really seem to remove it altogether.next morning its back again.

It's important to rinse your mouth out immediately after using your inhaler Also, plain probiotic yoghurt may help.

Have you approached your GP or pharmacist?

I used to have this problem but afraid i'm unable to remember what my GP prescribed. It's no longer a problem for me and wonder if this can be because of the yoghurt.

Good luck,

Rita
