Asthma worse since moving abroad.

Hey everyone, I'm 17 and from England -Brighton area. I moved to Portugal - Porto, less than a week ago and have already had 2 asthma attacks. My asthma is usually very good apart from the breathlessness and wheezing around animals. I take a fostair inhaler twice a day and my ventolin inhaler when I need it. I have anxiety which doesnt help. Anyway, since moving here i've felt my breathing is far more shallow, and wheezing occurs during most of the day. Is there anything I can do to stop it from being so bad? or does anyone know why it has worsened? Its been a steady 25° here if that helps in any way.

Thank you!

Hi ya.

You could have an allergy to something out there? Maybe hayfever or pollen? Record your peak flow for a week or so and book to see a doctor. Maybe try some antihistamines. Anxiety can also make asthma symptoms worse so be aware of that.

I hope things settle down soon.

Thanks for the reply! I take allergy pills already which usually helps. I literally cant breath normally at all. today has been the worst of it. I will do the peek flow idea and will see my doctor tomorrow. Thank you for the help!

Could it be that you are eating different food? Sometimes dairy can trigger asthma .

Could just be a combination of environmental factors. The climate may well be a big factor; it will be different to what you are used to, and as a result so will be the native flora, the way potential irritants hang in the air etc.

There have been occasions in the past where I have had problems with asthma on holiday which have been put down to climate - usually if we've gone somewhere that is slightly cooler and has a higher rainfall pattern; both are known triggers for me, particularly the latter.

I often find that a new place triggers asthma. I was ill all of one summer when we moved house - in fact that happened to me twice once when we only moved about 50 miles distant and then once when e moved to the Oxford dustbowl. I found just keeping on doing the things I Have always done eventually when my asthma was bad got things to settle. Always check that you don't have an infection though.
