My 17yr old son has just started Zolair treatment. Does anyone have any experience of this and how helpful it was? Many thanks.

Hello, i was on xolair for the past 5 years but however my consultant decided to stop it in May due to it having no effect upon me and i wasn't stable. But before that time i had a much better quality of life and was much happier person and my asthma improved throughout that time. I was the youngest to begin the trial so it was a fight for my consultants to get the drug licensed to me but they won and i had a life for 5 years.

I hope the xolair treatment helps your son and his asthma begins to improve.

wishing you Luck

Thank you so much Byrony, that is very encouraging. I followed the Zolair posts on this forum a few years ago but never imaginied my son would be prescribed it. He is a life long severe asthmatic - he had a goodish spell for a while and then the asthma spiralled out of control again this year. His paediatrician finally referred him to respiratory team and although it's all been slow moving, he started Zolair this week. I am desparately hoping it helps.

I am sorry it stopped working for you Byrony. Good luck and thanks again.

I trialled it last year but didn't continue as infection is my main trigger whereas the allergy side is more controlled.

Thank you Twinkly (like the name!).

it was fine trialling it though - a bit of a palaver as had to stay for 2 hours post jab for first 2, then 1.5 hours and then an hour in case of reaction to it. So long winded, but other than that ok. Did make me really tired as well.

And thank you - not feeling very twinkly at the moment though - spent nearly 4 weeks in hospital initially due to brittle asthma but then acquired pneumonia in there which sent asthma to square one.....then home and back in 4 days later. Been home 8 days and still recovering. Grrrr!!

Sorry to hear that Twinkly. Asthma is awful - I'm a life long sufferer (as well as my teenage son) and I spent most of my childhood in hospitals. I have it low-level all the time and bad flare-ups with colds etc. It is a much under-rated condition - I wish more could be done to publicise it and educate people how very serious it can be.

Anyway, must get off my soap box! Thanks for sharing Twinkly and all best wishes to you.

I was on Xolair for about a year, and we decided to stop it as it was just not working well enough for me. I had lots of admissions whilst I was on it and my asthma didn't seam to respond to it.

It doesn't work for everyone but for some it's just a miracle treatment that allows them to get on with their lives! I really hope that you get relief from it, because I know many that have!

Further to my original post about my teenage son going on Zolair - he has had 4 lots of injections now and his asthma has definitely improved. He hasnt had an attack for over 2 months, is sleeping better and able to go back to some sport. He still gets wheezy but it is much more manageable. We saw the consultant today who was very pleased with test results and gave the go-ahead for another 6 months of treatment.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my post and best wishes to you all.

Thank you Twinkly, that's very kind of you.

Consultant impressed on us the high cost of the treatment but it seems my son was an 'ideal candidate'. The nurse administering the injections told us how it has helped a lot of people. The treatment used to be restricted but she said it is being made more widely available now - let's hope so.

Wow I'm so pleased for you and your son Angievere, sounds a brilliant outcome.

Maddie (aged6) is due to start anytime now so after reading your posts, I am greatly encouraged.

Thanks for your update and I hope it continues to improve

Hi Emily. I couldnt remember how old Maddie was - she has been through a rough time (and you too of course). I am so pleased to hear she is starting Zolair - that is fantastic news. Do let us know how she gets on. xx
