asthma coming back?

My only symptom at the moment is the feeling of a tight chest when trying to breath deeply/yawn. More annoying than anything as feel like i am unable to move enough air into my lungs.

I had asthma as a young child tho grew out of most of my symptoms, only have an asthma type cough at times. No longer have any asthma medication.

Feeling fine in myself and not struggling to breath nor coughing or wheezing, so not sure whats going on.

Thanks

You seem to have dodged the worst of asthma and to have grown up without spending ages in surgeries and A&E. The last time I attended A&E was nearly eight-years ago but I got fed-up with waiting so left and returned home. I just rely on deep breathing to expand my windpipe and lungs.

bn taking pf for past couple of days

5.10.14 - am 330 pm 340

6.10.14 - am 310 pm 350

so not a huge variation between the numbers. tho only been tracking it for 2 days so far.

I've heard that you never really grow out of asthma - the symptoms can get better and worse at different points in your life and can appear to go away completely, but apparently it never really does go away completely (don't know how true this is though!)

I would say it might be worth a trip to the doctors, especially if you have no medications so no ventolin inhaler -if it is asthma coming back you should definitely have a reliever inhaler I would have thought, and at least if it is nothing it will put your mind at rest.

Your peak flow is fairly consistent but it perhaps could be higher and really, if you're worried you need to see a doctor. It could be that your lungs are complaining about the change in the weather, you could have a virus, it could be your asthma returning or it could be nothing to worry about but it's better to know than to take unnecessary risks.

Please, please don't take the advice given by Grownup70 and rely solely on deep breathing because it really won't do much for you if your problem is asthma. You would be much better to get checked out and follow your GP's advice. Deep breathing should be as well as your medication NOT instead of it.

keep well.

thanks Annista and Jen.

i will keep track of things, i think pf is low for my age and height, tho is pretty consistent.

predicted pf is :

Normal PEF reading 434

tho lower pf can b 'normal' can't it? my best is generally 350

i do have ventolin available if need be, (asthmatic family members, hence being able to get hold of a pf meter)

thanks again

I'd be tempted to have a chat with the doctor or practice nurse, just to get yourself back under their asthma radar and perhaps carrying your own ventolin for a while, simply for peace of mind. In case of interest, I am currently suffering a bit of air hunger like you describe, but also with sighing, and it would seem to be hyperventilation syndrome, probably from anxiety (situational but also asthma anxiety), which waxes and wanes; you could perhaps be anxious, and could discuss that as a possibility with the doctor as well.

Hi Winnie

thanks for the reply

do you feel anxious along with ur breathing issues?

I don't feel anxious, i just find it rather annoying.

I am not generally a worrier or anxious person, and generally avoid visiting the GP where i can, don't think i have been in over 10 years.

Good tip on the ventolin advice, as it does help.

thanks again

That's great that its not anxiety. As for me, yes, some very difficult life events have caused a generalised anxiety in me, to add onto the asthma anxiety. Not nice, but 'any roads up'. :)

Hi!

For me same situation happened 2 years ago. I had asthma as a young child but then grow out of it during most of my teenage years then I started feeling tight chested visited the gp who said I am fine then it hit hard with a severe attack and was put on step 4 medicines straight away after the attack settled. Then the attacks kept getting worse and just cant find a solution to the problem.

So yes keep that old ventolin and try to see someone

Hope you get better

oh Yas sorry to hear that, hope u manage to get on top of the asthma soon, luckily i haven't had any severe symptoms or attacks

Dont worry will be seen at the Brompton next month and they should sort me out but dont leave your asthma till it gets bad like what i did
