Steroid question if you can help

As Im on lots of meds and take prednisalone as needed.

My consultant added a new inhaler to help keep me off prednisalone but wonder about the daily steroid inhaler ...(. Seritide 250 2 puffs twice a day + flixotide 250 2puffs twice daily ) is that still safer than courses of 40mg prednisalone when needed ?.....lol Glynis

Hi Glynis, the dose you are getting from your steroid inhalers in total per day is 1000 mcg fluticasone from the seretide (which also has the long acting reliever in it, as its a combination inhaler) and 1000 mcg fluticasone from the flixotide. Thats equal to 2mg in total. As opposed to 40mg of prednisone, which is systemically absorbed and has a greater effect on your entire body, whereas with inhalers the greatest effect is in your lungs. Sounds very sensible!

Since taking Seritide 2 puffs x 2 a day for the past 7 years I have not have to need prednislone at all ! I am much better for regular Seritide and much happier as Pred gave me terrible side effects! the inhaled Seritide gives me no side effect s at all! yay!

I'm also on the same amount of inhaled steroid, 4 puffs of 250 seretide twice a day (so 2000mcg per day), I much rather this than pred as the side effects are far less. I'm reasonably sure that my high dose seretide lessens the frequency and the dose of pred that I have, it certainly improved my symptoms.

I've been on Seritide a few years but had flixotide added 4 weeks ago . hate prednisalone reductions So hope flixotide helps keeps me off them....lol glynis
