seretide 250.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help recently been changed from clenil modulite to seretide 250 well about four to five months ago, recently feeling really breathless after my puff on inhaler and it makes my throat feel like its closing up??

Is this normal and has anyone experienced thus from seretide before?

Asthma is quite controlled at the moment but don't want to stop using meds.

Worried ...

Any help appreciated?

thanks

Xx

It might be a reaction to either one of the seretide drugs, or the propellant used! I react to the propellant in salamol very slightly, it just makes me cough normally, so is tolerable, if a tad annoying, if it is propellant you might not get the same issue if you use a spacer - if that doesnt resolve the issue or the reaction gets more severe then i'd contact your GP to get it changed. There are lots of different combination inhalers so you might get on better with another one!

was your asthma not quite controlled on the clenil? Just seems strange to have meds upped if you werent symptomatic!

My asthma was really really bad with clenil, used clenil for about two years and was always fine but was then getting really breathless and back and to too drs was prescribed steroids multiple times so my asthma nurse decided to change my meds to seretide and salbutamol as and when I need it, will try my spacer and see how I get on thank you for your reply soph. What meds do you take and how do u find them and get on with them?

My combination inhaler is fostair. I get on reasonably well with it, it can be used as a reliever as well (up to a certain number) and i find that useful as it lasts a bit longer. There is a bit of a query at the moment as to whether its giving me an irregular heartbeat, dont really want to change it as i dont get on with turbohalers very much when struggling, and my endocrinologist says i cant have seretide anymore, so im a bit limited in options!

i also take ipatropium which i dont really notice on a day-to-day basis, but if im growing bugs in my lungs, or starting to go downhill or whatever its really making a big difference.

the main thing that helps me day-to-day is uniphyllin, its never been massivly beneficial having the IV aminophylline in acute attacks, i resolve so quickly with magnesium usually that it just doesnt do much. but since starting on the uniphyllin the breathlessness on a daily basis walking around the house and campus and stuff has reduced a lot! Its not a nice drug, side effects can be grim, and with so many interactions its easy to slip up and risk getting toxic levels if you're not really careful!! Its difficult as well as i HAVE to take some meds that interact with the uniphyllin so my levels need monitoring closely as things change! very irritating!

in terms of reducing the number of acute attacks, weirdly domperidone has done the most for me, the theory is that im getting some non-acid reflux which the domperidone can help to reduce, and some people can be kind of allergic to the non-acid reflux stuff and as my general ige is high but they couldnt find any specific ige's that were high this would fit into this theory quite well! get some freaky side effects, but they're more annoying than problematic, since starting onthis ive noticed a HUGE difference!

those are the big ones that i notice the difference for, its a bit tricky, things like montelukast were started with a whole load of other things being changed and uppings and downings mean i have no idea if i notice the difference anymore, my doc says to stay on it as its pretty good (esp with the ige stuff) and i dont get any side effects. and i notice the other effects of stoping citirizine and omeprazole before i have time to notice if my lungs care or not! hehehe!

How do you find the seretide? Has it made a big difference? its a bit scary if you've found something that works and you might have to stop it, but you could always switch to another combination inhaler, see if that works for you or not, and if it doesnt you could always go back to seretide and try to work out the side effects! Seretide is a pretty common one, but i know there is fostair and symbicort too! its seems strange you got on well with it for a while, but i wonder if you've either got a bit or an URTI making your throat more irritable, or are becoming more sensitised to it over time!

i think i misunderstood the timings of changes when you said that you had really well controlled asthma - i now realise you meant on the seretide!!

You might be better off sticking to ventolin and change your steroid inhaler don't go for a dry powder inhaler as it feel like there's no actual medicine entering the lungs. Aerosol inhalers are better for you ;)
