Skin Rash from Steriod Inhaler...advice please.

Hello Everyone,

My 4yr old daughter has been using a Qvar 50 Beclometasone steroid inhaler at night for a few months now, just 1 or 2 puffs before bedtime.

It seems to be helping her but over the last few weeks she has developed a skin rash on her chin which seems worse some days rather than other as some days it seems to spread upwards to the side of her mouth.

At first I thought it was where she had dribbled or a bit of Ezcema so have tried all sorts of creams to help it, Hydrocortizone, sudocrem, savlon, vaseline and just moisturser.

I since noticed that the rash can be a side effect of the steriod inhaler use, does anyone know what can heal the rash or should I just take her to the doctor and get the inhaler changed?

Any advice greatly apreciated as her poor face is starting to look so sore :(

Hello,

Is she using a spacer with it with a mask? this may be contributing to the problem as the steroid may be going onto her chin as well....

Not sure if she is able to use a spacer with just the mouthpiece at her age, but ensure she brushes her teeth after using the inhaler and also washes her face too. Have you tried basic aqueous water based cream and also use that to wash with too. (Sudocreme is good too) Also AVoid hydrocortisone cream on the face !! (Unless it is the low strength that has been specifically prescribed for facial use)

You could ask your doctor as there may be a different type of steroid inhaler that she can use and they may be able to prescribe some other cream to help.....

The cold weather may be contributing as well.

Hi Kate,

She is using a mask it's a small yellow spacer with mask so I understand that it could be going on her chin, make sense now.

She normally does wash and teeth first then inhaler, so I will change it round and see if thats helps too. I think I will also see what the doctors say, a visit there can't hurt anyway only help matters.

Thankyou so much for your advice, it is so helpful to post on this site :0)
