steroid sparing drugs

Hi people,

I'm starting steroid sparing drugs today (cyclosporin) and can honestly say out of all the meds I take, this worries me a lot!

I've heard lots of bad stuff about the side effects.

Has anyone been ok ok these? Have they helped you get off or drastically reduce your pred?

Thanks everyone

Don't know about cyclosporin, but I hope you have minimal or better still no side effects from it, and that it helps reduce pred use. Guess you have to just see which is the lesser of the two evils (so wish that asthmatics didn't have to do this). xxx

dont laugh... but my dog was on ciclosporin for years at a really high dose. He had very severe inflammatory bowel disease, and it enabled us to get him totally off steroids which were completely wreaking havoc with his body. For him it was a complete wonder drug, I really cant tell you how much difference it made. Initially he had difficulties with nausea and vomitting but we then gave him it with food for the first week - after that he tolerated it with no problems. The only side effect he had was that his fur grew beautifully long and silky! lol he had nicer hair than me... :D

I really hope it works for you :)

Nursefurby, unbelievably not only has your post put a big smile on my face, it actually has made me feel better!!!

I will try taking it with food as I did feel nauseous for q couple of hours after I took it this morning.

Looking forward to beautiful hair! Lol!

hahahahaa well Im glad to have done so!! :D Ironically the vet has just put our other dog on it, for atopic dermatitis.. lol. Miracle drug in my eyes, I dont know what the human version is like, but the animal capsules are like damn horse pills, they are HUGE..

good luck with it, I so hope it works for you :)

Hi Angelica

I did a 6 month trial of cyclosporin was in hospital when started them to monitor until I reached the dose wanted. Unfortunately I still had exacerbations and was unable to reduce the maintenance dose of Prednisolone at all and my Consultant decided to stop the trial. The side effects to start with was drowsiness which subsided then I had an even sorer mouth than I have at the moment with nebs and inhalers. I had regular liver and renal function blood tests. He did mention Methotrexate but I declined as it is similiar to Cyclosporin and wasn't convinced it would work either.

Thanks for the info flowerfairy :-)

I currently feel like a bit of a zombie so nice to know its not just me!

I'll see how I get on.

Well, I'm a week or so in and finding the side effects weirdly hit andmiss!

Some days I've been fine except for being a bit spaced out but other days I've felt sick and today I have stomach pain (upper).

Will give it a bit longer and see what happens.

Hi Angelica

I have taken methotrexate, didn't reduce steroids just made my hair start to fall out. Good look with your journey and hope your new pills help.

Lisa xx

That doesn't sound so good Lisa! :-(
