Kick Asthma holiday

Our son is at the kick asthma holiday this week. He says he's having a good time! It's his first time away like this. It all seemed really good when I dropped him off and I feel confident he's being well looked after. Anyone else's child there this week?

Hi

My son is 9 and really enjoying it.... can't wait to see him again now!

I hope your daughter has had a good time as a volunteer and will not too be tired after the week!!

I hope the holiday's helped my son feel 'better' about having asthma, seeing other children there with asthma.

Hi Jackie

I'd love to hear more about this when your son is home, my son is 8 and I would be interested to hear more with a view to him maybe going next year!

I hope he had a wonderful time and brings home lots of big hugs for his mum.

Hello clarebear and joanuk, for more information see here Asthma UK Activities for children > kick-asthma-holidays.

This year's adventure holiday was in Merchiston Castle, Edinburgh. Peaksteve and Dr Cath (fellow forum moderators) are amongst the volunteers and others are AUK forum members. Last year was in Laches Wood, Staffordshire. There has been more around the country in previous years but Asthma UK only have had the funds to run one holiday recently.

Hi - glad the kids (of all ages) had such a good time! We did too - we feel it was one of the best holidays ever!

What did we do? Well, the littlies (7-11s) did:

Treasure Hunt

Arts and Crafts (Pirate themed)

Outdoor games (incl football, rounders, wide games, obstacle course)

Trip to Bonaly Scouts Activity Centre (Orienteering, ball pool, BIG obstacle course, ball pool/climbing wall, giant games, relay races)

Swimming and water fight

Educational activities and games

Disco/party on the last night....

....and probably more that I've missed off.

We got some sleep at some point as well....!

Looking at a timetable (which is probably cheating!) we also did:

Grass sledging and trampolining at the activity centre

A morning in a soft play centre

Ten pin bowling

Quiz night

Film night

Crazy science (making gloop, film canister rockets)

Cookery (pirate-themed biscuit making)

Camping (or ""glamping"", seeing as we did it in tents in a theatre!)

It was a fantastic week, and I know a lot of the kids said they wanted to come back again. Keep an eye out and we'll announce details of the next Kick Asthma holiday as soon as we know them.

TJ and Dr Cath thanks for all the info, sounds great fun :)

Hi TJ, Dr Cath and Peaksteve

Thank you all for the information I will look out for details of the next holiday.

Sounds good, are they also happy to deal with anaphylaxis to nuts/peanuts and provide 'safe' meals and snacks? Not sure if he'd be ready to go off on holiday on his own next yr where he doesn't know anyone, he'd b 7 by then, but will deff keep the idea for the future. He'd deff love all the activities.

As jackieh says, Asthma UK are well versed in dealing with many food allergies on the Kick Asthma holidays. We liaise with the venue's kitchens to ensure that all allergies can be catered for - in some extreme cases meals have been prepared for just one child because they couldn't eat any of the items offered on the menu at that particular meal time.

At smaller venues (where Asthma UK are the only party using the venue at that time) the kitchen staff ensure that there's always at least one option on the menu to suit every participant.

My son had a lovely time, and came back very happy.

Asthma UK looks after the children really well and made sure they had lots of fun.

My son even enjoyed the games/activities about asthma.

Yes they do take children with food allergies. My son has food allergies (though not anaphylaxsis), he came back taling aobut all the other children there with food allergies too - really good for him to expereince this.

They are very careful about nuts and we were told not to bring anything containing nuts.

Thanks..........That's great to know!
