Having problems taking Clenil MDI preventer

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with asthma and have been taking Clenil MDI for about 6 weeks now. I take 2 puffs twice a day.

I have no problem taking my ventolin reliever inhaler, which is also an MDI. However ever since starting to take the Clenil, I have found it causes me to cough when breathing it in. I use a spacer and it is easier with the spacer but I still find I am using 3 or 4 puffs sometimes instead of 2 because I sometimes cannot help but cough when I'm trying to breathe it in.

I searched the forum but can't find anything on this. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you think switching to a DPI would help?

Since using the preventer my asthma has been much improved so I don't want to stop taking it!

Hi Emma

Some of them do make you cough just after using them, have a pause to cough. If you have real problems talk to your GP/Asthma Nurse. Clenil is good its tastes of chocolate!

I think it's worth discussing with your asthma nurse. You may find that you don't have any problems with a DPI, so I'd have thought it's worth trying.

Thanks for your replies. I went back to my GP yesterday morning and she prescribed me Pulmicort Turbohaler instead of the Clenil MDI.

I can't believe how much easier it is! It is not causing me to cough when trying to breathe it in like the Clenil was. It has a red marker that tells you when you are down to your last 20 doses. You don't need to coordinate spraying and breathing, and I can't accidentally spray my tongue!

I deffinitely prefer this type of inhaler and I really want to ask to swap my ventolin MDI to a dry powder Turbohaler too. Is this possible? Do they have a reliever inhaler like the Pulmicort?

Glad you get on well with the Pulmicort turbohaler. You can get Bricanyl turbohaler which is a reliever.

ok, thanks. I will ask my GP about the Bricanyl Turbohaler at my next appt.

Is it ok to switch the type of inhaler? Would there be any reason why my GP would object to this? I dont like to be awkward the Turbohaler is just sooooo much easier!!!
