Threat to specialist nurses

What is happening around the country with regards to specialist nurses being asked by managers to cover short falls in staffing in other areas?

We have been asked to cover shifts on a ward but not willing to say why. Is this happening any where else? Does this not devalue our role? Who do the patients in our care go to for help & advice when we are unavailable due to being on a ward?
