A bit of a side effects rant...

I've recently been put on prednisolone as I've got a really bad chest infection and a very low peak flow and have been having absolute nightmares with the side effects.

I'm generally quite a calm rational person but since I started taking it I've been taking it my moods and emotions have been all over the place and I've been feeling very anxious, restless and jittery as well as not being able to sleep and having a constant headache and fever. I also feel quite hyperactive which is a bit of a nightmare becuase i'm still feeling quite ill and generally weak from the infection.

It's got to the stage where I've had to go and stay with my parents until the side effects calm down because I've been struggling with carrying out everyday tasks, but of course this isn't really an ideal situation becuase it means I'm missing university etc...

Was wondering how other people react to their medication etc?

Hope you're all good :) k x

Been there, done that and still wearing the T-Shirt! I've been on long term high dose steroids for over 4 years now and the side effects are sometimes as bad as the asthma the meds are helping! Rest assured when you come off the short course things will improve. I have terrible mood swings from agression to depression. When I feel angry I have to just be alone and chill out, same for when i'm feeling low. Luckily it doesn't occur frequently. I too get very hyperactive and talk and talk and talk, much to my girlfriends annoyance as I usually talk rubbish, apparently all men do! I suffer from anxiety to and that causes me to over breathe, but I have seen a resp physio for that and have been given breathing control exercises which help. Something called Butekyo technique and it really helps to calm me down, much more effective than the SSRI medication they put me on (citalopram), ive added a link below for you.

At night when you go to bed, dont have a TV on, don't read in bed, just go to bed and turn off the light. If you cant sleep get up and rad in another room or watch tv for a while then return to bed. Try to keep the bedroom a place your brain associates with sleep alone, that was advice given to me by asthma nurse and it has helped as I used to watch tv in bed but now I find I cant sleep if the tv is on in the room, might not be an easy option for you if you lib=ve in halls though.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

I really understand the problem you are having with anxiety, and getting your doctor to admit that this can be a side effect of the medication is very difficult. I have recently changed GPs and my new one is much more helpful, suggesting that I use a website that offers online CBT. I don't think it can stop the anxiety setting in because it's a side effect of the meds, but apparently it will help you to deal with it. I don't know how good it is because I've only just got the address, but I figure that anything is worth trying. The address is moodgym.anu.edu.au/welcome

Good luck

I can totally sympathize with you there, whenever I am on Preds I always suffer terribly from side effects I tend to go very woozy (sorry not sure if I spelt that correctly) I also have lack of concentration and when people speak to me they sound as if they are very far away, I also get the horrible moon face and mood swings
