my daughter

jemma is seventeen now and has fought asthma all her life, she has now moved on to adult services, she had magnesium and as u say it worked very quickly, next attack though it didnt work nor did any other drug she was given, they had to shut her body down for around 8 hours she was ventolated in intensive care, this is the second time this has happened.....yes i have to agree drugs dont seem to work all the time but maybe that depends on how severe the attack...if jemma has an attack she multidoses and takes 8 prednisilone, and we go to hospital,i have learned that its always better to be safe than sorry, and never underestimate asthma

I have found that magnesium works for me..but the route of delivery has changed I used to have it over 20 mins now have it through IV push 2mg split into 4 doses given by ITU consultant every 2 mins...it hurts veins but really works. I have also been given in ITU a magnesium infusion over 24hours...I was ventilated at the time but apparently it works well on me. I also now have to have most drugs delivered into central line rather than proriferal vein.

Yes, I'm the same. IV magnesium used to make me feel so much better, now it doesn't make much difference. IV aminophylline used to make me feel better quickly, now it takes a while and doesn't seem to work as well. I do worry that it'll stop being effective at some point.

eta - The same with Prednisolone, years ago when I first started to take them, a few days at 20mg would make me feel great. Now I need to be a really high doses (60mg or even 80mg) for almost a week before I even start to feel any better!

Same for me with prednisolone, never had magnesium. Last short course a few weeks ago had a bit of an effect at the end of the week but now back to where I was. It was my 3rd in less than 5 months. Now waiting for first hospital appt.

nice to know am not on my own at the moment iv aminophylinn till works within 24 hrs but normally need few bags or chest splats when it comes down hard part is getting staff to realise this as wasn't on resp ward this time as after itu thats where normally go but ward had bug so was shunted to diff ward. least on resp ward all staff know me as am frequent visitor lol. as for pred lowest have got is 22.5 as chest kicks off at 20 despite xolair injections plus nebs etc etc etc,
