Nasty Messenger Virus

There is a really nasty virus going around via msn messenger, I have had it from 2 of my contacts. With both I was told that the contact had a picture of me and to click the link. If you get anything from anyone even your most trusted contacts that has an .exe file ending do not open it.

I understand that AVG and Norton currently are not picking this one up, I don't know about Panda, Sophos and McAfee.

thanks for the warning bex

Christine

thankyou bex!

i think my panda has picked up on it because it stopped a file coming in to me because it ended with exe.

does this mean i have it or my contact does ?

thanks again bex

Hannah your contact probably. It replicates itself by sending to everyone on your list, so I am guessing your contact has it. I will do a litle more research into it later.

hope no1 else on here has it

I don't think this is a new virus - nothing in the trade newsletters about it - but as ever you should always be vigilant when opening ANYTHING you receive, from ANYONE. And by any means; e-mail, MSN, etc.

I find that the best free anti-virus software for spotting most threats is AntiVir Personal Edition - you can get it from free-av.com

Bex - if AV software isn't picking it up yet, how did you tell it was a virus? Aside from the way it was trying to get onto your PC, of course. I'm always interested in different people's MOs for dealing with this kind of thing!

A friend who is a systems guy for ITN warned me a mutual freind had it. You get a message in messenger saying something like ""look at the pticures I have of you in myspace"". As this friend is at the events etc with me it is highly plausable she has pictures and I would have opened the exe had I not had the warning.

Handily-placed friends are always a useful source of info! Thanks for the extra info; will keep my eyes peeled for it.

I have just had the same message from one of my msn contacts. I had forgotten what I had read here and clicked on the link which thankfully was blocked by my virus protection software, so just to let you know its still going around!
