WINTER'S COMING :0(

As a quite recently diagnosed asthma sufferer - does anyone have any tips - lifestyle or otherwise - to help with the winter months? I really suffered last winter (yes it was a bad one) and although my medication was upped that helped me cope, is there anything else I should be doing, or not doing?

hi dazmanc,

When out in the cold keep a scarf or buff over your mouth to warm up air before gets in your

lungs and could try nasal breathing x

Keep warm,flu jab if not had one,Try keep rooms in house to same temp so lungs dont

react when go from warm to cold room etc.

vitamin c foods to help etc ,love glynis x

make sure u wrap up...u my look silly wearing extra cothes but itll protect your chest...im wearing jumpers already to keep warm...and i have about 15 scarfs to alternate between to wrap around my face to warm up the air before it enters my lungs...any sign of a slight worsening of your chest go straight back to the GP!

Thanks for the tips Glynis - get the flu jab through work, but I'll take on board the rest - or just move to Australia as Ratty suggests!!

I'm used to wrapping up as I spend a lot of time in cold, wet, muddy fields watching my son play rugby, but just wrap a scarf around my neck - never thought about round the mouth re cold air - doh! Thanks for replying

You can also get these fleecy things (can't remember their name!) from camping/ski-ing equipment type shops that are good to go round the mouth and they save breathing in scarf fluff and having that cause an attack.

Defintely take vit C, wash your hands a lot especially after going out. Like others said, dress warmly when going out.

Hi Darren,

I find that drinking plenty of hot drinks help. My fav at the moment is strawberry and elderflower cordial. Just making sure you keep wrapped up and taking your preventer at least 30 mins before you go outside can really help too.

Thanks guys - when the cold snap begins I'll make sure I'm wrapped up properly before venturing out - maybe a scarf plus a snood - plus I'll pop a few vit c pills - have a glass of hot vimto - take my preventer/reliever - rub my arm where I had my flu jab and pay my huge gas bill 'cos I've had heating on in every room of the house!!!

the thought was there with the scarf hey Darren haha...dont wrap it around your mouth to much though, wouldnt want your next post on here telling us all how you took our advice and was extremly warm and cosy, but sadly ended up back in a and e with lack of oxygen through having a scarf around your face :S

Flu Jab and chest infection

Saw the doc this morning for some antibiotics for a new chest infection, which has come on just as my eye infection has cleared..... (sigh) but forgot to ask an important question. I am such a regular visitor now I think he thinks I am a real pain in the neck! I think I know the answer though. I am guessing that I need to be clear of this chest infection before I can have the flu jab? Can anyone confirm this please? thanks, Karen.

Karen, sadly you are right, they will not give it to you if you are still getting over the infection. I didn't get mine at all last winter because I kept having low level chest infections. Hope it goes soon but glad your eye has cleared up. I need to check about having the jab and get it in quickly this year!

Know what you mean about feeling a pain in the neck, even if we aren't really. I have to go see mine again next week to get more anti-dizziness pills, 4th lot too and annoying side effects too, grr. Sorry for rant, just feel like you that I am back and forth all the time with asthma and other things.

Thanks for your reply - I suspected as much! I am so regular there now for chest infections I think the doc is grateful for something else to talk about. Eye infection (I was right, it WAS bacterial and not viral as he said and he admitted that today!), feet, he has referred me for consultation on bunion surgery which will lay me low for many weeks but I hope it will work, an old leg injury etc etc. He is also convinced I am allergic to my beloved horses, which I am not as both the eye and chest infection have come on while I haven't been around them. He had the cheek to say my asthma has been better while not with them, yes of course, as I am not exerting myself in catching, grooming, tacking up, riding, turning out, sweeping, mucking out etc! sorry, mini rant over!
