Hi Josie

I haven''t found seretide gives me heartburn but I have been on pred for 11 months now and that causes it for me. The Gp has given me lansoprazole which stops it. I would discuss it with your Gp - reflux can actualy make asthma symptoms worse and there are many treatments to prevent it.

Heartburn

Hi Josie

I am too on Seretide, and suffer with heartburn, but I think the cause is when you cough heartily, you disturb the acid and hence the heartburn. Seem to have bouts of it and then nothing for a while. Hope this helps.

Thankyou for replies. I also was prescribed Lansoprazole which did help. The Doc just basically said take it for a week then come off and then perhaps just take when needed. Personally, I would need it all the time but try as much as I can to avoid taking prescribed drugs constantly. Although sometimes I have no choice.

I find drinking milk helps reduce acid reflux too - think it probably neutralises it a bit

heartburn

unfortunately heartburn and asthma go together. You will find a lot of asthmatics on tablets permenently.I recently had surgery to correct mine-the reflux has gone but not much help to my asthma

Hi,

I am new to this forum and new to being diagnosed with asthma.

I had the heartburn first - was diagnosed with hiatus hernia, GORD (reflux) and oesophagitis in 1994, now mutated to Barrett's. Aspirating refluxed acid has caused my asthma.

In researching this, I have found very many people with asthma develop reflux and many people with reflux develop asthma.

I keep my reflux fairly well under control with Omeprazole (a ""proton pump inhibitor"" - others are Lansoprazole, Pantoprazole, Esomeprazole), and Gaviscon.

My reflux has always caused a bad cough. After sitting up for 3 hours one night recently, my GP diagnosed my asthma which I am attempting to control with a Clenil steroidal preventer inhaler. For the cough, I tend to take rather large quantities of Pholcodine Linctus cough suppressant at times. I am usually most breathless late in the evening after dinner. I used to be quite fit and enjoy cycling but now find I get breathless very quickly.

I would welcome any help anyone can suggest to help me manage my symptoms.

Meanwhile, for anyone with heartburn problems, I have found the website and forums of the Barretts foundation quite helpful. (But heartburn does not mean you have Barrett's!)

I get acid reflux and have chronic rhinitis all year round, which again seems common in asthmatics. Problem is I wonder which ailment triggers what as there's so bleeding many!! Sigh.
