hi tas, I don't have any experience of hartlands either but i remember seeing a tv programme about it several years ago and it sounded impressive. I hope you get some more useful info from others who've been there.

Becky.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay - I've been away so only just seen your post.

I'm treated at the Heartlands - I was referred there several years ago when Addenbrooke's found me too difficult to handle. It may be just chance, but it has changed my life- before I was in every few weeks for weeks on end, regularly in ITU etc. Now I have gone 18 months without an admission!

The lead consultant is Dr Mansur, and I think new patients always see him. He is very thorough and only schedules one new patient per clinic session as he devotes hours to you. You will also see Katy, the asthma nurse, and possibly one of the other nurses too to do spirometry etc.

Before attending for the first time, you'll be sent loads of questionnaires to fill in to assess the severity of your asthma and its impact on your life. One of these also screens to see if you have psychological issues from the impact of your asthma that could be controlled.

Following my first appointment, when I was there for about two hours, I later had a scheduled admission and underwent a number of indepth tests - lung function, allergy tests, bronchoscopy etc. I think it all depends on your particular case which tests you do. It was nice to feel we were finally getting somewhere.

Re. Xolair - I should warn you that they are having enormous problems with funding xolair even at Heartlands, with don't think it will be easy to get it paid for, even after assessment at Hearlands!

Good luck!
